Thank you all for the information. Yes, lately I was filling my tank more with regular than premium, before the gas jumped up I was using premium and I heard that pinging sound (this is the right description of it) only ocasionally when I was in a to high gear for the speed I was running. Yes it happened at 3000 rpm when running around 70-80kph and wanted to jump to about 100 on highway. I'll change the gas for sure. Thank you again, Ionut

I don't think that wrong gas is your problem. KLRs are supposed to run fine on regular gas. I've never put anything else in mine. If your bike runs poorly with regular gas, even if it's cured by using premium, something's probably not quite right with it. -Lujo ionutzz wrote:

You did express concern about the valves. Hve they been ever been adjusted. I'm thinking really tight valves will contribute to pinging (higher compression) .And even if it didn't you can burn valves, seats, and even piston.

Meybee I should check the owners manual.. I thought I read it said minimun 92 Octane or something close.. On a 6 gallon tank a few extra cents is no biggy to me, so I use the 93 Octane mostly it just seems to run better on the KLR. But I am also 1000+ miles past the first valve check so meybee I should just shut-up and go back to drinking coffee.... Reason the bike is in the garage still... refuse to ride it until I get the valves checked/done and want a doohickey transplant too.... Lots of things to do, I figure if I dont get to ride until these basic things are done, it might give me more priority on doing them, since I know if I start riding I will put them off just a , well maybe next week, or the week after.. ect ect ect... From what I've heard,from back since shims were first used in the '70's, the shims are surface hardened. If someone tried to sand or file one down, I think there would very observeable wear on the shim. Plus my ex-boss said he mic'ed a lot of used shims,and never found appreicable wear, unless the motor was ran without oil. Dave A12 "Russell D.
