new technology meets the old....

Post by klrider99 » Mon Mar 10, 2003 8:28 pm

I am working with a friend to develop a LED bulb replacement set for the KLR 650. The parts catalogue at Buy Kawasaki shows six bulbs I believe, it looks like 4 of the 12v,3.4W and maybe two of the 12v, 3W. The diagram shows one bulb with no reference number drawn to it. Does anyone know what number these bulbs will translate to (eg, 194) and exactly how many of each would be in the meters of an A 13? Thanks, Pat

Yes, I think those would be 194s. My Tengai has 6 or 7 in the gauges, and I think my KLRs are the same. Anyway, I saw some dud on ebay selling commercially available LED replacements on ebay for like 2 bucks a piece. Mark B2 A2 A3

Pat, Bet I can guess who the 'friend' is. :-) You trying the single, or multiple LED versions? I have a stash of singles that I might try. Loaded up Red with the multiples, but may take the one out of the high beam indicator. Too bright and 'annoying' in very dark areas + the beam effect of the LED's smack you right in the eyes. I'm not sure if you're talking about the tailight bulb, but just by way of information, Dual Star is going to be selling an LED tailight that just plugs into your socket. It is a pretty slick setup (saw it while visiting their office). They are also working on getting LEDs for the turn signals. You might give them a holler and see if they have the tailight bulbs in yet. Kelley.......... A16 (Still missing) A3 D13 __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Kelly, We were talking about the dash lamps and indicators. I mounted some HyperLites on the underside of my rack for more rear visibility during stops. Cool.... as long as it's not more than the $7.98 that Pep Boys charges for the ones they currently stock. Mark B2 A2 A3

Yeah, I tried one of those. IMHO it provides about 1/3 of the light output compared to the standard filament based 1057 bulb. This ws the red LED APC brand for $7.95. I used it for a month thinking it was fine. Then one day I swapped bikes with a friend and road behind my own scooter. Very very dissappointed, I changed the lamp out when I got home. On a long trip mostly off road, or with very little traffic, it's probably okay. But not for routine use in big city traffic (LA). I hunted down some others on the web, supposed to be brighter, but these cost 60-70 bucks, each! Mark A9, A1 --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:

I have yet to see an LED setup, aftermarket or OEM, that's as bright as a plain old 2357. The KLR's assembly isn't very reflective so nothing short of a plastic-melting 15W/50W will make it very impressive. I'd just stick to an 1157 or a 2357 and call it a day. RM

I think that they are 158's. I re-lamped everything with 194. Any LED module that is a direct drop-in for a 158, 168, 194, 2825, and a few others should work just fine. RM

Speaking of which, anyone know what the license plate light bulb is? It seems that between the instrument panel and the license plate light one can easily save 25 (precious) Watts by switching to LEDs. Thanks, -Lujo [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
