Thanks for all the feedback to help with resolving my Lost of Power in the rain.... I still don't think we have it resolved. The clear line to the carb has not been re-routed as many of you have suggested, however I don't think its that line. I have two KLR's riding side by side (ok behind each other...) but only one giving problems. I would think that if the clear hose was a problem on one, it should be apparent on the other under identical situations. The one with problems does NOT have emmision stuff on it and never did(only one hose fitting on fuel tank). I've check and checked to try to determine any differences in the bikes but come up empty. One is a 2000. One is a 2002. I don't think any water in the fuel tank would lead to the curious situation of having the problem ONLY when the throttle is backed off or when bike is not under power, such as straight and level riding.
I live in Minnesota and both bikes are positioned in southern Chile, so can't experiment now, but sure would like to have the solution in my suitcase when I go back to the bikes(Feb 2004)
Does anyone agree that a possible solution could be the coil???. Any other experiences like mine?

For the cost of 2 feet of hose and a "T" fitting and maybe a few
small zip-strips.. why not just bring it with and do it, if will not
hurt anything.
I think Fred sells it in a kit form if you dont want to chance
getting the wrong sizes, I really dont know what it was, I happen to
have material handy and used it.
Maybe your current vent hose is partially pinched and the added water
at the tip is just enough to cause the problem ?
If anything, at least cut the hose at the bottom at a 45 degree angle
with the high side facing towards the rear of the machine.
Seems odd, but maybe you have a saftey switch getting wet and
shorting on decel only.. Extreme long shot, but possible I suspose.
Might want to bring a tube of die-electric grease along and
clean/grease all the contacts if you ride that much in the rain.
Hope you find a cure for your machine.
Electrical problem to me just dont seem to be it, since it only does
it slowing down.

Any other experiences like mine? I would do the mod to the vent hose anyway. We had three stock KLR's riding in heavy rain last June. Two ran fine, the third was cutting out regularly. All stock. Jack and I have ridden together many miles on two very similar KLRs. Both 2000 models. Both sold in Kansas, even the serial numbers are close. I don't believe he has ever done anything to the carb or ignition, and I know I haven't. My KLR is the one with the rain problem. First time we rode in a heavy rain was in Oklahoma. Very hard rain, but with so much wind, the water was blown off the road. First time the KLR died in the rain, I was ridding by myself in Florida. Terrible storm, the water was getting deep on the pavement when the problem started. Later, Jack and I were ridding in Kansas, did it again when the water got deep on the pavement. Next day, did it again in the Black Hills. Every time, it happened when the water was getting deep on the pavement. Jack would be waiting for me somewhere down the road. We rode in a lot of rain going to and from Alaska, but was never hard rain, so no problem then. For a long time, I thought it was the coil getting wet. Two reasons why I don't think it is the coil or anything electrical. One, coils must put out their highest voltage under acceleration, if the coil was getting wet, I think it would do it then. The other, I don't think the coil would dry out and let the bike restart so fast. It always acted like it was flooding (with gas). So, I buy into the theory about the carb vent. I avoid deep creek crossings, so I just did the angle cut thing. Haven't been in a toad strangler yet to test it. Allan A14> >

Yes, it could be a coil issue. On a KLR650 you need to pull the tank and
apply RTV around the joint between the coil and the coil wire (leading off
to the sparkplug). One of our KLR650 listers had a lot of trouble with
water getting into the coil and causing intermittent problems during a ride
to/from Alaska.

Picked up a Teknic Supervent jacket (www.teknicgear.com) at the Cycle World
show on Sunday. At this point, Very impressed...great fitting vented
textile....& rang in at under 100 bucks.
Plenty of CE approved armor in the right spots, seems well made, not hard to
look at, & fit's adjustable.
Bummer....Bob Hannah wasn't at the Speedway with the Yamaha Race of Champions
bunch. Was told he'd personal matters to tend to. Broc Glover was there
though, & still Really fast after all these years.
The show was good, many interesting vendor booths, & cool bikes. (including
Sandsharks future V-Strom..in yellow with full factory hardbags..very slick,
shoot me a note & I'll forward the pic) The Kawasaki & Suzuki reps were
great. Honda had nice bikes present (RC's winning CR250), but was pushing
alot of cars....ok, it was cool seeing an Acura NSX up close, but bike week's
for bikes.
Saw (3) KLR's at the speedway. (2) 98/99's & one A2.
Got in there around 9am, & out by noon. Just before the monsoon started.
The ride up & back with ZRX11NemesisMatt was big fun. Near zero traffic, &
near perfect route conditions for the big 100+mph test of the new TCP Bandit
bodywork. (yea, are never really perfect...with squirrels, deer, flats, etc,
but....all felt flawless/rock solid/etc. TCP (France) can be pain in butt to
deal with (took me 3 months to secure this lower fairing), but their
product=goodstuff.
Near Direct KLR related stuff...nice trail ride on Monday, after watching the
200.
Got some new Dunlop stickers for the fork/disc cover.
No real new news...nothing will break.
Did see some of the PD nerf guards, at Swampy's WDSRC Daytona Dualsport ride,
on an '03. Now I see what all the fuss is about! They're next on the KLR
(didn't realize I needed, until I saw one) list. All best.
ps-ing: -Eric Bostrom's gonna win his share of races on the more technical
tracks this season, Daytona's pretty wide open, & Honda has the definite edge
with HP there.
