break in service

Post by Dan Pauley » Fri Feb 28, 2003 11:15 am

Ed, (I think it was you with the new KLR) You plan on doing the first service or letting the dealer perform it? If letting the dealer do it, make sure you ask to know what the valve clearance was for each valve and which shims are currently installed. I think many service tech's do this by telepathic powers rather than actually opening the valve cover and measuring. They will want paid for it but make sure they earn their salt. As for how to ride it during break in? I have heard really good arguements both ways. Have never seen repeatable scientific "proof" that improper break in caused any premature wear. I ride a new bike untill "I" get to know the machine. Then ride it normal. Never had a problem. If you do this break in wrong, you could need a set of piston rings as early as 28,000 miles rather than 30,000 miles. I'd surely loose a bunch of sleep over that... Dan / \ P.S. Good on ya fer rid'n in the winter. We are the true 1%ers, (or stoopid) Dan / \

break in service

Hello List, I was I was hanging here a couple of years ago before heading for a year and a half in latin america. Thanks for all of you who helped me out. Excellent trip. If you can - GO! So after 35k miles (estimate, the speedo didn't make it past Texas), I had the engine rebuilt. I was expecting to run it in <4k revs for 500 miles or so, but like I said, no odometer. But when I got back on the bike it was so obvious how I was meant to ride it. First 50 miles or so, I could literally hear the valves seating themselves. A lot of miles later, and I'm upping the throttle gently until the engine's telling me not to. So I carried on running it just below the 'rattle threshold'. And many, many mile later, she is sweeter than ever! cheers Toby This message is for the named person's use only. It may contain sensitive and private proprietary or legally privileged information.
