I recently did a complete overhaul on a '91 KLR650 dual sport into a
street fighter. Besides completely striping it down and repainting
the frame, engine, and bodywork (semigloss black); I freshened the
top end and used the best aftermarket components I could find.
Among the features are:
Pirelli ST "Scorpion" tire (very good 90%street, 10%dirt)
Ferodo ductile iron front rotor
Ferodo FP carbon sintered pads
Goodridge kevlar front brake line and bleeder bolt
progressive fork springs
new fork seals
new clutch cable
new windscreen
new handguards
Big Gun Exhaust (thermal coated, shiny, and LOUD AS HELL)
K&N filter
desnorkled air box
K&N/DynoJet jet kit
billet steel replacement balancer chain "doohickey" and spring
new chain with less than 300 miles
new front and rear sprockets (+1 on the back)
stainless steel hex head frame, controls, and engine bolt kits
subframe bolts replaced with higher grade bolts
progressive adjustable rear shock
Travelcade gel seat
SV650 front and rear turn signals.
Also comes with a set of Bridgestone TW21 knobbies of you want to go
play in the dirt, a lifetimes supply of oil filters (10 I think), and
both factory service manuals.
As you can see, I've basically done just about everything you can do
to a KLR to improve it. It was alot of fun to put together and is
hoot as a commuter bike/hooligan that can go anywhere, but its a bit
more of a handful than I want (I created a monster)! and I've found
that dual sports just aren't my thing.
I put over $3,000 into it and would like to get at least $2,800 for
it OR trade for a fairly low mile, near stock Blue SVS + $$$. Contact
me and we can swap pics and make a deal.

fixing broke bikes / spare parts
I had performed minor surgery on my 84 KLR 600 in order to get it running. Once after I bought it and cooked the top end, and again after I laid it down and watched it outline my future path of travel.
In the most recent episode of watch the game warden crash the motorcycle in new and inventive ways, My front forks were a little twisted, and I put it up on a bike lift, just enough to strech out the suspension, and loosened all of the bolts on the trees/tubes, and it straightened it's self out, and after I tightened everything back up, has worked perfectly ever since.
That and a new pair of handlebars, and the dash off of a spare parts bike the Kaw dealer helped me find, and I was good to go.
Also, on the initial episode, I failed to check the valves when i bought it and proceeded to melt the head. A little speed shop magic, and the stator & regularor/rectifier out of a electric start bike to give a little more juice and I was off to go again. But I did end up having to put a second fan on the second radiator to keep the heat down. I set up the stock fan on a relay to come on all of the time, and used the factory plug for the secondary fan, to come on and assist when needed.
I do the majority of my riding on USFS ATV trails in first gear. The lack of moving air along with the head that, according to the machine shop will never be able to be milled again, causes the bike to run farther on the warm side than I am comfortable with without the second fan.
Right now it has stock sprockets on it, and I am thinking of changing the ratio to make 2nd what 1st is now. I don't think this will be a problem, since I do very little on road riding. The main road in the county is only 55mph, and my usual speed is around 40-45 when on blacktop. On the trail, I seem to give the clutch a heavy workout, and the lower gear ratio would help out substantially.
Any suggestions on the best ratio? (Fr & R Sprocket size and Chain Lenght?) I will have to buy new sprockets and chain, so I dont have to worry about mixing and matching, as the ones I have are just about worn out.
Also, If anyone has them, I am also looking for a kill switch assembly, and a turn signal switch. I can solder the turn signal switch back in, but the kill switch does not look like it lends it's self to individual replacement.
Thanks for the help,
