klr with an appetite for oil
I have an A17 with 2600 miles on it. This past weekend I rode out to the
Catskills from Boston and back. About 400 mi round trip. I noticed that my
bike seems to be consuming some oil (about a half quart). There is also
black carbon all over the right side rear fender. Is this oil consumption
normal for such a new bike or have I got a potential ring problem already? I
did follow the break-in recommendations and kept the revs below 4k, and only
ran dino 10/40 oil in it. The bike has been consuming oil since I got it.
Each oil change (two now) has been slightly less than 2.5 quarts... more
like 2 with the filter. I hoped it would go away as the rings broke in, but
it seems to be the same rate. Any ideas?
Also, where would the carbon be coming from? I did the pilot screw mod and
it's currently at 2.5 turns which seems OK.

Heya Richard..
Yes and Yes
My bike has less miles and burned oil like that when I did alot of
highway miles at 5000+ RPM (14t front), I figure its the nature of the
beast being a large single piston thumper. (Keep it full thats all)
Soot / carbon is a by product of having the muffler vent right next
the the plastic fender.. Kinda dumb hey ? I now have a different pipe
and it has a down spout, so carbon seems to have gone.
Others have talked about there bike burning oil when on the highway
alot, or running the snot outta them. I know I will never have a high
milage KLR since most of my riding is in town and off pavement, but do
not mind adding oil after riding it hard. Rather have it burn some
oil than burn a piston..
just my take on it.

potential ring problem already? Rickster, Dooden says yes, I say no to the oil consumption. Just my take on it. At 50,000 miles, I noticed my A14 using a little oil. About 1/2 pint in 3,000 miles. I had been ridding the snot out of it in July. One day, I rode it WOT into the wind for 100 miles when it was 106 degrees. Oil consumption went back down after the weather cooled down. BTW, the battery was almost dry in that 3,000 miles. Another time I could see it use any oil was the trip to Alaska. Added 1/2 pint in Anchorage, and it could have used another 1/2 pint when I got home. One pint (half quart) on that oil change (11,000 miles). It could be rings, but I'd check out the breather before I went after the rings. If the breather is not working correctly, it could put excess oil into the air cleaner. Well Dooden.... that does make me feel a little better. Thank you. If it's
normal that she burns a little oil at hi-revs, I can live with that.

D'oh, just when I was feeling a little better about it...
I'll check the breather, that's a great suggestion. I suppose if it keeps
up, I'll try and get some warranty service to fix it... rings are covered
under warranty right?
Thanks, Allen.

BTW, Allen, how did you break-in your bike? conservatively or
not-so-conservatively?

Conservatively, very conservatively, or at least I think so. It took all the self control I had to keep it at 4,000 rpm or less. Bought it in March, so the weather was cool. 200 miles the first week, then rode it to Bartlesville OK for a rally, about 250 miles. At 400 miles on the bike, I started running about 4,500. Just couldn't help myself. This bike has seen many miles at 5,000 rpm, but has never been over 7,000 rpm. I'm a real believer in observing the redline. Switched to synthetic oil at 9,000 miles.
