Jalal....I can't give you the exact lat/long, but everyone knows where Julian is ;<) I'm NE (about 60 miles) of San Diego at the eastern intersection of SR 78 & SR 79, 4,000 feet above the desert. If you come that gives us 5. So far Richard May (RM from the List), caliphery, Tony Cornett, Steve van Twuyver, you and me. One more and we are full. I'm looking at the second weekend in August, probably Saturday if that's ok with everyone else. Plan to arrive around 8 - 8:30 or so to give the bikes a chance to cool down before we assault them. If you have hand tools, bring what you need...however I should have a smattering of my own as well. I'll contact you and the rest of the guys towards the middle of July to firm everything up. bseifert71@... [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

doohickey correlate to overtightening of balancer mechanism

Does anyone have a feel for whether or not overtightening the balancer adjustment mechanism plays a role. I have been around the list long enough to know that overtightening has been a real problem as well, but I can't recall if the details of that failure mode are the same.

how hard you ride, how often you change oil, how much beer you drink, whether or not you smoke, how much you exercise you get, how much red wine you drink with pasta dishes, etc.

From what I've read, this can do it too. I think overtightening could cause a brake at the torque point, but some of the failures seem to be due to shoddy quality control on Kawas part. I've got mine out now, waiting for a billet replacement from Jake. The unit was not tight at all, and I don't know for how long. It did not fail, but I'm certain the leverage that was supposed to be applied to the shaft (and wasn't) made for a very rough running motor. Side note, the weld on my oem doohicky is actually pretty good (compared to some of the pictures I've seen), but there is only about 3/8" remaining to adjust. Further, it is a very loose fit over the shaft.

For what? If you mean should you check the clearances, the manual says the first check should be at 800km and the next and subsequent at 5000km and so on. I'd check 'em as a routine (first?) maintenance chore. Todd (Springfield, VA)

Looks like there are five of us for the tech weekend.....experts to newbies to old farts. Let's see a show of hands now Weekend of Aug 10 or Aug 17? There's been a suggestion of making this a KLR weekend...if that's what you want, let me know soon so I can see what's available in the way of lodging. Lunch on the Saturday is on Chucko at Romano's Restaurant (with a real live '67 trumpet and a newish 748 duc in the basement). for no extra charge he'll get 'em started up and make the floor vibrate. We'll have some expert guidance for all kinds of mods that I've looked at, damn safety interlocks, valve check, fun stuff. Let me know. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
