radiator temp sensor switch for fan ??
Kawasaki wants $70.00 for this miserable little thing. Where can I
get a cheap one. Should be more like $7.95 IMO.
I am refering to the heat operated sensor switch that screws into the
bottom of the radiator and governs the fan on my 99 KLR 650.
Thanks for your help.

Go to a "FRIENDLY" auto parts store when they arn't busy. See if they
can eye ball one that matches. maybe Borg-Warner or TRW has a web
site where you can look them up.

Steve,
I broke mine off using apparently too much torque when reinstalling
after a radiator repair. I was unsuccessfull finding a replacement on
the internet and paind the $70. The manual specifies the
temperature at which it should close. Good luck and let us know how
your search comes out.

Holy s--t, $70.00!!!! If you can't find a cheap replacement, jumper it
out. I did this to my 250. Now when I'm riding back in the woods going
slow I can manually turn on the fan when needed. Good luck. Anthony

While I was looking around at VDO gauges and for information on how to
hook up oil pres. and oil temp. etc gauges up to my KLR, I came across this
site. Its got tons of sender units categorized by temperature ranges.
Maybe you can find some cross reference for the part number. Somewhere I
also saw the resistance figures when the sender is activated. Check it out:

Don't know to much about the subject, but hope this helps.
Tom.

Steve,
For $70, you could probably buy a complete after market cooling fan
kit. The stock fan switch may have standard pipe threads & not
metric threads. The switch needs to close the circuit to ground
around 200 - 212 degrees (F) & open around 196 degrees. If you need
to use an adapter to fit a non-stock switch, the on/off temps may
shift a bit. NAPA or most local auto parts stores should be able to
find a suitable switch. As a last resort check with imported car
dealers. Let us know what you find and how it works.
I took a quick look at Tom's suggested site, but it appears that
their sending units are meant to work with electric gauges, not as
an on/off switch. You need a temperature SWITCH & not a temperature
sending unit.

Ronayres.com wants $48 for that switch, BTW. Why pay $22 extra for some
chump to dig out a microfiche and take your credit-card number?

I looked at 4 different auto parts stores today... no luck, not even
close! Cars all seem to use much larger ones. I have it jumpered to a
switch for the time being, but I prefer it to be automatic and not
manual. I have enough on my mind already. I will try the bike salvage
yard next week but ever since they got "hip" they'll probably want
50% of new list! (Yeah right for a used electrical item.) Impossible
to argue with those monkeys at Steele's Cycle Salvage. So in the end
I will probably go with RM's suggestion.
Thanks, Steve Green
