I know we have discussed hot weather clothing before, but at what point do most of you decide not to use your motorcycle jacket and go with something lighter like a tank-top? Yesterday it was only 75 or so here in NYC and I saw plenty of people riding in short sleeves or dress shirts (on a BMW) I was wearing my JR ballistic 3.0 without the liner and was not uncomfortable at all. One day it hit almost 90 and then I was HOT. Just curious what others consider to hot to handle. Karl A14

For long rides (including my 40 mile daily commute), I never leave home without my Aerostitch on in *any* weather. When running errands around town, if it's warm enough (70+), I'll wear my Joe Rocket Phoenix over a tee shirt. Guy KLR650 A13

Hello Karl I do not ride on the street without protective gear period. It does get hot here on the coast of VA (mostly humidity) but I feel the one time I go without will be the time I eat asphalt. No matter how I look at it, being hot is not as uncomfortable as a case of road-rash. (your opinion may vary). I don't know about your area, but here it seems they hand out cage licenses to anyone who can pay the fees...I try to do whatever I can to protect myself from these morons behind the wheels. (even have one of those DOT worker vests, although I believe increased visibility here just means it's easier for them (cagers) to get you in their cross-hairs!) Karl, My rules for heat and motorcycling: 1. It's never too hot to wear a jacket on the freeway. 2. It's rarely too hot to wear a jacket (can be partially zipped) around town. Compare the feeling of hot nylon to the feeling of sliding on hot asphalt. 3. It's never too hot to wear some good protection when hauling butt off-road. 4. It can be too hot to wear a jacket when you're just plonking down a dirt road in the back-of-beyond (105 in Utah a couple years back). A long-sleeved T-shirt is advised for sun protection, however. I base my choices on the perceived risk of my activity. In a small town with sane drivers, you can probably get away with no jacket. In a big city with idiots at the wheel, I'd dress up. Once in awhile I break all the rules and make a quick trip to the store in a pair of shorts. My rationale for this little piece of stupidity is that I hit 45 mph on my bicycle wearing next to nothing, so I should be able to go 40 on my motorcycle wearing just as little (but a better helmet) :^D Lucky so far and knockin' on wood, __Arden Kysely

Layers my friend, layers. I always wear my phoenix jacket (for warm weather), and then if it gets cold I have a snowboarding jacket (thin warm + waterproof) to put over it. The combo makes for a great 40- 100+ degree weather riding. Helps to have a case to store the unused stuff in. Trev

Since I got my Tourmaster 3/4 last year I haven't ridden without it. Except for the one time I thought it was too hot, and I slid into the local conveinence store parking lot on my left hand, elbow and shoulder. I haven't forgotten that incident or my jacket. Even have the leather or kevlar gloves. I remember road rash, and I'll sweat. millerized

I just bought a mesh FirstGear jacket $139 it has padding and flows air real good. I live in Bakersfield, CA and will be in the 100's this week. The jacket is a real good investment. I looked at Joe Rocket same price but shorter. Thanks TC

Always at least a leather jacket for commuting or Roadcrafter for all else. Travelled Bakeoven road at 107 degrees last summer, knew it was coming so I packed the pockets with ice in John Day, OR. 100 miles later still had some ice and my boys were taking a refreshing swim in ice water trapped inside the suit at the seat.

My dealer has the Phoenix jackets, I'm thinking of getting one. Right now I'm wearing an Ocelot enduro jacket. No padding, but better than nothing. Ed A15
