all muffled up? lol

Post by jerzdevel » Tue May 07, 2002 7:03 pm

I just bought a 2002 KLR650 and only have 120 miles on it.... Is it just me or do these things seem to run like someone is holding their foot over the exhaust? It kinda seems as though there is more horsepower in there, but cant escape! I sure hope that a jet kit and different exhaust helps (after the break-in period). Maybe some more miles will loosen things up a bit also. It is so quiet, the only noises I hear at road speed are the vibrations of the mini fairing. At slow speeds I can hear the front brake dragging over the exhaust note, hahaha Please tell me that things will get better! :)

I hate the burst your bubble, but the KLR is no screamer. A jet kit, air filter, air box modifications and an aftermarket exhaust will give you an extra four ponies max.(about a 10% increase) based on the various dyno runs I have seen. The penalty is around a 20% decrease in fuel mileage (from 50MPG to 40MPG in most cases). The jet kit does improve low end and throttle response however. IMO, a quite exhaust is good thing (I am not trolling here). John

after-market mirror mountings.

I did this, and then broke it again. Try to only screw in the mirror three or four threads, that way it won't wreck the $120 switch cluster when it goes the next time. Dual-star sells a mirror perch that replaces the back of the clutch perch clamp for $15, and has sort of a breakaway machined into it so the mirror can bust off, leaving your clutch perch intact. I still carry the old clutch perch clamp in my toolkit in case this doesn't happen as advertised. Devon millerized_2000 wrote:
