I have a friend that is shopping for a dual sport. Today we looked at a 1995 KLX 650. It has just over 1500 miles on it and is in great shape (all original etc.). It appears it is a California model. The asking price is 3000.00 but the seller may go as low as 2500.00. I rode the bike at it seems fine although the suspension is a bit loftier than my KLR. Is there any issues anyone knows of with this model that he should be aware of?The engine appears to be different then my KLR. I was wondering if this 95 KLX engine was affected by the balancer thingy issue. Any opinions are appreciated. Dave Bracht Nampa Id.. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

FWIW, a friend rode his '95 or '96 KLX to Alaska and back two years ago with zero problems. He cruised 70-75 for 300-400 miles a day. He now has about 12,000 miles on it and loves the bike. Michael Hunt Boise, ID http://www.sailingwaters.com/moto/srsr.html

I looked at and test rode one a few years ago. I liked the bike. It has a different engine than the KLR. The suspension is better with upside down forks. They are solid as a rock. They just do not have the aftermarket support of the KLR. Ed A15

More importantly, they're no longer imported into the US so parts will become hard to find. The front end is common with the KLX250/300's but I am not sure how much of the rest of the bike is... Z

David, I owned a KLF650C, the street legal ds version. I later got my first KLR. The KLX handles better and doesn't seem to have quite as much torque. The forks are more expensive and time consuming to replace seals on and seem to not hold seals as long. It is difficult to get the KLX to the same level of KLR seat and fuel range. That being said, I have often wondered if I did the right thing by selling my KLX. BTW, it was a black one and ended up in the Boise area... Bert Fox Elko, NV

Hi David, I owned a '96 KLX650R (off road version), its a great bike. That price seems a little high. If you can get it for $2500, I would say that is a great deal. And consider the KLX a totaly different bike then the KLR, its much more modern. Perimeter frame, beefy upside down forks, more HP, lighter too. Its much more dirt worthy then the KLR. But it is much less touring worthy then the KLR (dirt bike style seat that feels like a 2x4 on edge, smaller 3.2 gal gas tank, not as much aftermarket support). I don't know if the KLX has the same doo-hickey thing as the KLR engine. The only thing that I have heard about the KLX engine is the same thing as the KLR engine, you have keep an eye on the KARC mechanism (automatic compression release on the exhaust cam), and you have to keep an eye out for the automatic cam chain tensioner to make sure its doing its job. My bike never gave me any trouble in 2 years of hard off-road use. I also cruised it on the highway at 80 mph and it did great. Personally, I think they are great bikes. Here's a link to a nice write up of a comparo from Motorcycle Online: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mccompare/opendp.html And here's a link to the KLX650 group, they could fill you in on the bike too: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KLX650 Good luck, Ed

Oh, that's odd. Mine is a stock 2001. Just the plain vanilla model, not California, Canadian or whatever else there might be... Wise men still seek Him...
