just curious why you guys....
Hello group,
Just curious why you guys make all these modification to your KLR
650's...I did trade a 98 in for a new 2002..still waiting for it to
come in..dealer here was sold out...but is getting me one from a
dealer out of town. The 98 i bought last year was modify..different
jet in carburetor..holes drilled in side of air cleaner..a supper,
supper loud exhaust...and i think it was re-geared. I plan on keeping
my new KLR all stock, maybe just a different seat. Also will be my
last bike that i plan on buying..i am 53 and just going to use the
bike to work and home, around town and maybe a short trip of a day or
two. I am over my hot-rod days..don't care to see how fast it will go
or anything like that. Do any of you guys on here keep your bike
stock?.. is it like a hobby for you guys to modify the KLR so much?
I know that i did not like that exhaust on that 98..drove me up a
wall!!! to loud for me...why did i buy a new one? I thought for my
last bike..have a new one...that way you know what you have..
Thanks...

I plan on keeping my KLR pretty much stock.
After the OEM tires are toast I will move to a more aggressive off
road tire, since my plans are to be off road alot with it.
Have a set of sprockets waiting to be installed now, to slow it down
some, rather have to not keep the RPM to low off road, since a stall
will result a fall or crash most likely.
Other than that, only stuff needed with a real reason. Looking at a
locking tailbox now, basically a trunk to store commons in.

Replacing the front shocks is mandatory. Other than that, to each his own.

Jury is still out on the front end, maybe progressive springs, yet to
really use up all travel on OEM's, but again I live in winterland,
and just starting to ride this machine a little aggressively with
spring starting to happen.
Time will tell on this one.

Bike's are like a house... some people move in and live with it the same way
for 30 years... others have to make it feel like their own, put some of
themselves into it.
I prefer mostly stock on most of my bikes. Simple items to make it more
comfy for me and give it a smidgen of my personality.
Growing up racing in the 70's, I won championships because I only raced
lightly modified bikes. Others were faster, but mine never broke. You gotta
finish to score points.
Plodding along by myself in the middle of no-where, I like the peace of mind
that my stock bike will probably keep running until I get home.
To each his own... do what pleases you the most,

Also just got an A16 brand new. I had a '93 (A7?) that I did most of
the stuff to that we came up with on the list. New one I'm going to
change the things that make it better, but not EVERYTHING... As most
of us don't. I have my new brake lines sitting here ready to install
Saturday, and this is with 0 miles, as this should be considered
necessary. I'm going to clean up the jetting a little to make it run
nicer, but I plan to keep the stock exhaust this time. I'll fix the
safety switches (read: bypass) as this is also a safety item.
Stock is good, but some little things can help to make it a better
bike. Do what YOU feel like doing, and enjoy reading about how far
some of the listers "push the envelope" and maybe you'll find a
couple of things that you would like to improve upon.
Enjoy the new ride!!

Some do, some don't... personally, I prefer not to mess with what works. However, when there are things that I personally feel are not to my liking, or I feel could be easily improved, I figure why not... For instance, progressive front fork springs, man what a difference, to me anyway. K&N filter, mostly ease of maintenance. That's all I've done to mine. The only other thing I will do eventually is a different exhaust when Tweety finally poops out. Won't be anything loud, just different, maybe breathes a little better. When I first got my KLR I planned on NOT making any modifications. I
have two other bikes for tinkering. But, the other bikes ended up just not
needing work, and once I started riding offroad I realized there were a lot
of ways the KLR could be improved.

I've made a lot of changes to my bike to personalize it, but that's mostly
because it's nice to be able to make something your own. Also, the KLR is
cheap enough that it's not that hard to justify.
The first change I made was the most important -- progressive springs for
the fork. If you are smaller than List Standard Normal, that change is
less important. The other important change was a SS braided brakeline for
the front. Cheap and a vast improvement.
All of the others are more customizing and bringing the bike into my own
tastes -- tall windshield, Corbin seat, sideracks and saddlebags.

Mine is stock. I guess that's why you don't hear much from me. I may change a few things as they wear out. I'm tooo cheap to replace perfectly good parts. I don't tax it as much as some of the other listers. brent> >Hello group, > >Just curious why you guys make all these modification to your KLR > >650'sDo any of you guys on here keep your bike > stock > >Thanks... > >R.J:)
