Let's not forget the venerable Suzuki GS850. I know they can. I almost crapped my drawers. It was a friends bike and we were "trying to impress some chicks" I can tell you without a doubt the well maintained Suzuki GS 850L could pop wheelies. I had my ST100 up several times. I think you are mistaking current shaft bikes to the majority of those, built back then.. There are several older shafties that can lay the rubber down and lift that wheel. You just have to suspend them properly. The Japanese engineers didn't have a clue back then on how to solve drive-shaft lift. I guarantee that with the right rider, you can wheelie a shaft driven bike. It is a shared experience though personal performance that this is possible. I've done it, I know other have as well.
