So, Cheap guy that I am, I'm wondering should tubes be replaced at same time as tires? My tires and tubes are 7 years old but with only 3700 miles. Have Kenda 270's for replacement, but shop is reccommending tubes too. What do you guys think? Sid a8

Absolutely. Rubber dries out. *7* year old tires??? Wow... I'm suprised the bike doesn't slide across the floor on it's own... jim

I am Cheap also.. I would look at the tubes. are they dry? cracked? or do they still look in good condition? Dale

Ahh ...... I used to be cheap with tires and tubes and such. Bbbuuutttt ........... I went backwards at 70 mph plus oncet in my 83 RX7 on the freeway because I cheeped it out and put new tires on the front and bad ones on the back and locked up the brakes. Go fer new ones plus tubes. It ain't that mucho dinero when you consider the alternatives at 70 mph plus. Criswell svnorcal wrote:

Thanks all for the advice. I went with the tubes and would of had to anyway as the shop pinched both tubes and had to put in a second set. I paid more to mount the tires than what I paid for them! The 1am and still not done story reminded me of last mounting a tire on a xl500 with rim locks. I need the practice but must wait for ANOTHER TIME. Should we have rim locks on our KLRs? Sid a8

Something ain't right here. Less see, you paid them to change your tires, they pinched (both) tubes and they charged you for that too? What kind of nimwit did you have change your tires? They damaged your tubes, they should be the ones paying for them. In all the thousands of tires I have changed, I can only think of one tube that I pinched. Of course it was my fault and I replaced it with a new one no charge to the customer. Sounds to me like you either need to learn to change your own tires or find someone a little more competent and honorable to do your work for you. Rim locks never hurt but are not really necessary until your are running off road and with low air pressure, less than 20 psi or so. The lower the air pressure the more they are needed. DID NOT mean to slam the shop for unfair practices. I ordered new tubes, they pinched the new ones and replaced them for no additional charge as it should be. Fred, you are right that I need to practice changing tires. Last time for me was in 1985, changing out knobbies on a xl500. Didn't have much coin then and changed from street to knobs and back three times. Couldn't, wouldn't pay for an extra wheel back then. My excuse now is having more wants that resources! I'm glad I changed out the lowering links and short side stand last night myself. Took less than an hour and was an easy swap. I'm lucky I actually had a 22mm wrench lying around. This board is the greatest! Now if I can work on the ugly 94 color on the bike. Still hasn't grown on me other than seeing the same model on Grendel's site. Well, at least, I do not fear theft of the bike. Thanks all, Sid
