I don't think there are many people here with 250s, but just in case:
I have a 1996 KLR 250 (canadian spec., not "reduced effect" version)
and have done the following 3 three things:
1. Opened up the airbox
2. Put a larger 125 size main jet in, stock was 120.
3. Shimmed up the needle with washers, equivalent to about 1 1/2 - 2
notches.
Made a big difference in the 1/8 - 3/4 throttle range. Decent power
now for tight single track trails where speed is lower. Good bottom
end. Still flattens out past 3/4 throttle, I could try a larger main
jet I guess. All these changes cost less than $5.00. The next 4 hp
will probably cost $300+ (pipe etc.).
