balancing act

I am taking over a KLR 650 from my brother, it has been sitting in his backyard for a few years and I want to take it and get it going again. I think it just needs a new chain and to have the rear brake bled and the carb cleaned out. Anyone have any suggestions as to other things I need to check on a bike that has been sitting for a while? I also bought a new battery. I will be going to pick up the bike in a few weeks and taking it to Tampa where I live. It is a 1995 KLR 650. Anthony, You didn't mention if the bike runs or not, or whether it was sitting out in the weather, or just how long it was sitting, but you can't go wrong changing the oil, doing the balancer chain adjustment, checking the sprockets for wear before you buy a chain, and checking the brake lines for cracks. I would also check the brake pads front and rear, bleed both brakes, lube the clutch cable, and ensure that the throttle cables are both free and lubed and that the throttle closes completely when you let go of it. Can't hurt to clean the air filter, either. Check the air pressure in the tires and make sure they are in decent shape (no deep cracks) before hitting the road. Be sure and inspect/flush out the fuel tank really well.....they like to rust. I'd also change ALL the fluids. Good luck and happy motoring! Frank

Off hand I would do the following: Change coolant Change motor oil Change fork oil Clean Air Filter Lube swing arm Inspect tires for cracks and check for proper inflation Inspect lights and turn signals for proper operation Inspect and lube steering head bearings Lube throttle and clutch cables Check all bolts for proper torque Replace brake fluid and bleed brakes John --- Anthony Oliveri wrote:

Congrats Anthony. I hope all works out. I see the KLRlisters have given you a checklist. Hope to see you thumping about the Tampa/St Pete area. I own a 1987 KLR650 and love the motorcycle. I've been through two front tires, three rear, and several different tubes. I have never balanced my wheels and have never felt any vibration. Yes, I use Slime. Is it the Slime? Is it luck? I don't know. RM
