need help - cant figure this dang thing out?

Post by DREWB5@AOL.COM » Thu Nov 01, 2001 1:20 pm

Hello all, I have a 95' 650 and just did some thing to it and can't figure out what it could be. If any one could offer any sugestions on where to start, please do! Here goes, I just took the bike out for a 30 min(various conditions (Hwy - street) ride with the girl on the back(her first time) and the bike stalled-out at a light. I was unable to start the bike for several min. and then only after giving it a few good twists on the throtle. I was only able to keep it going while keeping the rpm's up. I thought I did something inside to the shaft due to over stressing the bearing on the shaft due to the extra riders weight (no...she is only 120 lbs). But, the bike didn't make any unusual noise when I cranked it over - It just seemed to just not spark and start. I did just add a full tank of prem. gas but like I said I rode the bike for a good 20-30 min befor she began to misbehave. This I thought ruled out a gas problem? Is ther another area I should be looking at? Please help - The last days of summer in NYC are hear and its getting cold - I need to ride. Besides I like to spite the guys at the fire house by ridding in well past the time they have put their HD's

Drew, You need to have your carb cleaned out and then install an in-line fuel filter. I got stranded 30 miles from home with exactly the same problem. I could drain the carb and keep it running for a minute or two, but that was it. It would also belch gas out of the overflow tube for the carb. After I had a friend with a truck come pick me up, I had the shop clean the carbs and put in the filter. I now carry a spare filter with me. I've seen numerous cases of this on the list over the last year. Regards, Ralph

Drew, I agree that this sounds like a load of dirty gas, and now you need to clean the carb and install an inline filter. I put one on my KLR when new, having had trouble like this with my older bikes in the past. Where are you in NYC? Devon DREWB5@... wrote:

Ralph and Devon have fingered the likely suspects. While you're at it I'd install a T or Y vent into the vent tube; it's been known to cure a variety of carb ailments. It only takes 15 minutes or so to install. Maybe you can hook up with Bum and Devon, New Yorkers that have klr experience and could show you what to do. Bogdan
