power socket options

Post by haverkortbrothers@hotmail.com » Sun Sep 16, 2001 11:17 pm

Hey folks, I've been checking the archives on installing a power socket to run a Garmin eTrex Summit. It seems like I have two alternatives. Both involve a standard power socket that you can get at basically any automotive store. One theory says that I should hook this directly up to the battery and put in a 10 amp fuse in the point of power socket and possibly a 1/4 amp fuse inline. The other theory says that I should be able to connect the power socket to the extra wires behind the headlight (I believe that someone mentioned that they were for extra lights in the European models?). I hear these are a lower voltage, but they should be sufficient to run a GPS. What are you guys using? It would sure suck to set my bike/GPS on fire... Thanks, Tyson

The wires behind the headlight will run a GPS. But they are only hot when the ign switch is on. Your best bet would be to go ahead and hook it up directly to the battery. MotorMark

I use the 'extra' headlight wires for my GPSIII+. The wires are not lower voltage, but you probably wouldnt want to run anything with a *really* high drain off those wires. Mine works great. It is the hookup that I would suggest for the GPS. Pat / austin
