the screws that keep the windshield on??

Post by em905069@hotmail.com » Mon Aug 27, 2001 5:36 am

Dooes anyone know the part number for the screws that keep the windshield on? I lost a couple on my trip across Newfoundland in June/July. I also lost the two screws that keep the rear swing arm attatched to the bike, you should have seen my face when I saw that they were BOTH missing. I have never been very mechanically inclined and this is the first bike that I have had parts literally rattle off. I guesse it's a big thuper thing, my '82 XT-200 didn't teach about such things. Anyway, if anyone has those two part numbers I would be very happy to recieve an email. My dealer has micro-fiche dyslexia...every time I order an item I get the wrong ones. I am in Canada, if that makes a difference in part numbers. Thanks - Everett P.S. For all of those who thought I vanished...I have been RIDING RIDIND RIDING and loving every minute.

If I remember correctly, it's a 5mm screw. Same thing was happening to me (repeatedly) so I went to the local hardware store, picked up some LONGER 5mm (just happened to be black Socket-Head-Cap-Screws, which look nice) and also grabbed some 5mm nuts and locking washers. Being longer, they stick out the back (inside) of the fairing, you put the washers and nuts on. Bingo. They've haven't vibrated off since. Tom - 00KLR650

I think you'd be better off replacing them with the stainless steel ones from Jake Jakeman, the stock Kaw. fasteners are pretty much crap anyway... Email: jake_sagebrush@... The stock nuts (the black plastic knurled things) are plastic for a reason. A lot of windscreens use plastic "hardware" on one side or another. See if a local hardware store has nylon nuts that will fit a 5mm stainless bolt. Then use something like permatex #2 gasket maker (never dries) on the threads to keep them from shaking out. If you use metal nuts and screws, I suggest nylon or rubber washers between the metal and the actual windscreen. Devon A15 78 SR500 81 SR500 "Mark St.Hilaire, Sr" wrote:

free trade sucks!! nklr

Grandma warned me about anything that began with the word FREE. I wonder how many people thought government welfare was free, and became enslaved by it. Same principle. Thats why I love the lottery winners. On the day they win, its the "best" day of their life. They go back to them in a few years and many of them realize it was actually the "worst" day of their life. Life is full of one thing, irony.
