Subject: NKLR- Don't Do It!
>>snip>At the BMW Rally this year I got to look at the new GS.
Looking at it is one thang, riding it is another. I found the Dakar to be a big surprise and the only reason I rode it was because the R1150GSs I came to ride was gone. I am not in the market for a new BMW - I just wanted to taste the forbidden fruit and I am certainly not looking for another single. But, the Dakar was available, I ask to ride it and they said yes, so I rode it. It is superior to any of the other Japanese singles in my opinion. The KLR is a fine bike, but when compared to the Dakar, the KLR (and the others) come up short in areas that are important to some riders. Some like pep; the Dakar has plenty. Some want and need top shelf binders, the Dakar has them. Can it corner? You bet! It impressed me the way everything seemed to work together. Let's call it --balance. The Dakar has balance. It don't have the biggest tank, it don't have the best dirt suspension, it certainly aint the cheapest. But, the total package of compromises presents a pleasing balance with a bias toward the street and an occasional light duty gravel road. By comparison, the others seem crude while the Dakar is refined, highly refined. If I could have only one bike (and overcome my unfounded and misdirected bias against sophisticated electro-mechanical-microprocessor-driven devices), the Dakar would be on the short list, the KLR wouldn't. And as I stated; Don't Do It, because the Dakar sets a different standard and what I knew to be good, is now just so-so.
>>At the BMW Rally this year I had to stay away from my bike otherwise I
was deluged with questions - have a bunch of email to return to BMW types that want to know more about the KLR - so that gives you some idea - the KLR has a good rep amongst the BMW crowd.
