new '01 klr 650 mod questions

Hi folks, Just got a new '01 KLR 650 (put all of 200 miles on it so far) and was wondering what the general consensus is for like the top 5 mods that need to be made to the bike. From what I have been reading here and through the archives, looks like: 1) new exhaust (considering the Laser), do you need to rejet with this one? 2) braided front brake line 3) different tires (i'll probably be riding dirt/gravel/trails like 30% of the time) But I'll get some wear and tear out of these Dunlops first. 4) Already ordered the Moose bash plate 5) ? Should I wait until I get past the initial break-in period (500 miles) before installing the new exhaust and rejetting? Also, I see Loctite in my near future. I've already lost one bolt out of my fairing. I've owned several bikes through the years, but will gladly listen to any advice on what to do with this new KLR. If you can't decide by yourself maybe you don't need anything

I picked my 01 up a month ago. 1350 miles so far. My very first mod was a 16 tooth front. Dropped the revs about 600 on the highway. A set of gel grips too. Next Mod is a ss brakeline, I HATE the way the front feels. I'm going to wait till winter and do a pipe/K&N/open air box/Jet kit. I like to do it all at once for jetting reasons.

Stock exhaust is fine. It has a habit of tweeting, but otherwise does a good job of providing reasonable power, reasonable economy, and reasonable noise. I really don't understand the urge to replace stock exhaust systems. All anyone ever does is bitch about how crappy they are (except the Laser). The main reason I can see that people put on new exhausts is to annoy their neighbors and say LOOK AT ME!

And back. This is well worth your money. Next to Progressive Springs in the front, this was the best change I've made. I can even howl the tires with the new lines

Wear out the stock tires first and then decide what kind of riding you really do. I need to check today on whether my rear tire has arrived yet. I'm replacing the stock tires with Metzeler Tourances.

If you want luggage, get Arnie's or Tim's sideracks and a set of Ortleib dry bags. Waterproof, reasonably priced, can be mounted permanently. Only problem is that they don't lock. I would skip the exhaust for now, and with the money you save, get a Progressive 420 rear shock. Also get the Progressive front springs. It is a really easy mod and you get way more added riding pleasure for your money. I think the KLR is a fabulous bike bone stock, but if you feel like you have to do some mods, do your suspension first. CA Stu A13 Riverside CA -----Original Message-----

Well, I've ordered a CruzTools M1 Econokit. It's essentially the same as their top of the line $120 kit except that it has imported tools instead of USA made ones. It cost $50 plus $7 shipping and handling from the manufacturer. (I checked, and Fred doesn't carry it.) I'll just carry it in my saddlebag. I'll report on it once it arrives. I did my version of the PVC tool box mounted to the engine guards. I made mine out of 3" pvc, only 10" long so when (not if) I drop the bike off-road again the toolbox won't hit anything. It really doesn't hold much, the stock tools plus the extra wrenches, small screwdriver etc. I carry. I still keep a few things in my tank bag, but it's nice to have the weight of the wrenches etc. down low and out of the tank bag. I bought a mini air inflator at Costco last night, and sure enough if you remove the Imac style plastic case, it's pretty tiny. Fits in the side pocket of my tank bag easily. Devon "Ralph E. Smartass remark perhaps, but not bad advice either. I have bolted on a whole bunch of semi-necessary crap to my KLR, but I have not done any motor mods. On previous bikes I have done aftermarket exhausts, jet kits, racing carbs, etc. and have gotten great results, but I have noticed that fuel consumption increases a lot faster than performance does. My $.02- #1- alloy bash plate #2- stainless braided front brake hose #3- metal reinforced hand guards (cheaper than replacing a lever perch once) I would do all of these even if my KLR never touched dirt.
