I took off for an afternoon cruise Saturday. I was about 90 minutes
out when my right peg rotated and dropped 6 inches. Awful sinking
feeling. Lost a bolt. Fortunately, I was just cruising on a straight
stretch at moderate speed. Couldn't find the missing bolt. I couldn't
devise anything better on the side of the road, so I just tightened
the remaining bolt and didn't trust it on the way home. Your leg gets
tired dangling there. Thanks, Tim Bernard, for the highway pegs. I
picked up a few replacement bolts, replaced the copper anti-sieze I
had put on them at center stand installation with blue loctite and
torqued them all. Then I went over everything.
I keep getting reminded this spring that I don't know all that much
about motorcycles. Thanks to the listers who sent suggestions about
my gas starvation problem last month. I believe a kinked petcock
vacuum hose was the culprit. The problem kind of disappeared behind
another of my screw-ups. I was going out to the bike most days after
work for some tinkering. I don't know if I was high or what but one
day I started it, didn't realize the choke was on and was alarmed at
the idle at 3K rpm. Turned it down with the idle speed screw. From
then on, incredibly, my idea of choke on/choke off was reversed. This
gave me really strange symptoms - ohmigod, what have I done now!
Someone with a working brain straightened me out when they noticed
that I was riding with the choke on. A few more minutes of alarm and
confusion until we turned the idle up again - and things were back to
normal. No more problems. Hope most of you get a chuckle. Might help
other new guys.
