oil leaking out tube ?

Post by squidwannabe@hotmail.com » Mon Apr 16, 2001 7:57 am

Hey , There is oil leaking out of one of the drain tubes on my KLR.. The tube has a filter on the bottom. I was pulling some 1/2 mile long wheelies (I love the KLR!) and I think oil goes into the airbox and drains down ? any thoughts ?

You probably sucked engine oil through the crankcase breather tube into the airbox (easily accomplished with high front to rear angle), then the oil drained into the airbox drain tube (the tube with the filter (not a filter but a collection canister)). Pull the plug (if there is one) in the tube and drain the tube/airbox and check the airbox for an oily mess - I'm sure there may be one there.

Does that mean if I install a K&N filter I won't have to oil it ? :D ;) Thanks.

If I remember correctly, oil only goes into the airbox if you wheelie for more than a mile. Check your service manual under wheelies. I think its covered under the warranty. Seriously though, This doesn't inspire me to perform any wheelies with the bike doing this. It also smothers my rear brake in oil. Any one know of a fix for this ? Yes I am a squid.

Not a simple fix. You would need to blank off the crank breather on back of the gearbox case and put a new breather vent on top of the camcover. Mister_T

Maybe If I routed the tube through the frame on an acute angle so when I am airborn the oil shouldn't leak out ? It's just a breather so it should only be exhaust going through the tube right ?

yeah, three hours' commute through the rockies might be a bit much. i'm planning on leaving commuting, "rush hour", etc., behind with the northeast. -----Original Message----- From: Richard Ohnstad [mailto:rohnstad@...] Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 10:17 PM To: Peter Dahlheimer, MD Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] NKLR NXR Grand Junction, Colorado

Pete, I don't like to be negative (is that a double negative?), but I think the commuting, if you have to go through Ouray, will be a little tough in the winter months unless you have an airplane. Richard in Tucson 94 KLR650 86 VFR750
