The National Park Service is set to announce this Sunday that major changes are in store of Canyonlands National Park. The NPS spokesperson, who leaked the story and wishes to remain anonymous, states that the NPS is on the verge of making an unprecedented decision to develop portions of the White Rim Trail and allow commercial development. Two resorts have already submitted bids with construction due to start in early spring of 2002. Phase one of the project will involve the widening and paving of the road to Potash all the way to Musselman Arch and Shaffer trail up to the Islands in the Sky visitor center. Special cabling will be installed underground for motorists to enjoy information about the scenery and geology over their car radios while driving to the resorts. In an uncomfirmed report, several large fast food companies have been contracted to have joint facilities along the route. Phase two will be the construction of another large resort and golf course on what is now Dead Horse Point. The NPS and BLM have struck a deal with the State of Utah to purchase Dead Horse Point State Park. A large tramway will be built to carry tourists from the now State Park to the resort and golf course. Several helipads for helicopter transport will also be constructed.

this is terrible news...I wonder if they realize they're putting that golf course in one of the worst lightning spots in the world...should make for some interesting fireworks... Kurt

You guys are allowing your right wing bias to blind you yet again. The description above is part of a disinformation campaign by the current administration who are in the pockets of the corporations when it comes to the environment. The reality is more stark. The truth is accessible to anyone on the Sierra Club's web page but it takes an open mind to go there. Texas pals of Dubya have a contract in hand to build a Six Flags over Utah. Guess where ? In the Canyonlands area there will be several locations linked by paved roads and mono-rails. Island in the Sky, Arches Park and Dead Horse Point are but three. This will, by far, be the most ambitious project yet attempted by the Six Flags Co. They want it to rival or exceed Disney's theme parks. And you complained about Bill, Hillary and their so called green tape. You're getting what you deserve but some of us who where more far sighted are not. Bogdan

Hello, I won't say anything about the current "administration", as I feel their actions speak for themselves, but, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Will there be no untouched wilderness in 4 years? Will we be able to drive our cars to the most isolated parts of the North American continent? I sure hope not. Things are looking pretty grim for the natural world these days. It seems that every inch of the non-urban areas must be either packaged for our enjoyment by large corporations, or ruined to supply our current, ever increasing, level of consumption. Even if I never see places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or the vast roadless areas in this country, I believe they must be preserved at all costs. The "administration" does not seem "pro-business", they actually seem "anti-environment". If a chioce can be made to leave something alone or to tear it down, they will tear it down. It is a really frustrating situation, because once these areas are altered, there is no going back. Have you ever seen a dam torn down, or a road removed? This is not about "environmentalism" or "conservatism", it is about leaving something for future generations. Sacrifices must be made, but they should be in our behavior and consumption. What is really sad is that we will be losing Wilderness area to a theme park and a McDonalds. Forget about riding those lands due to liability concerns from the lawyers of the corporations. You had a better chance of getting to ride those lands when Bill Clinton was around.
