Further to the recent observations on the disintegrated starter motor, I would advise checking the one-way starter clutch If the (say??) 5,000rpm starter turns the engine at (say??) 1,000rpm, the engine turning at 8,000rpm (gulp!) would turn the starter at 40,000rpm, which would cause the damage you describe!! At higher engine speeds you maybe won't hear the starter engaged, if you did it would screech (happened to me on an FT500) Maybe someone with time on their hands could count the numbers of teeth in the reduction gear train and advise us all of the reduction ratio Hope this is of some help, Many thanks, Dick Morrison www.clydemotorcycles.co.uk
