muffler maintenance

Post by Clint Kendall » Wed Dec 20, 2000 7:38 pm

Kawasaki decrees that you remove the three plugs from the muffler every three thousand miles and blow the carbon from the spark arrestor. Beware! If you meet resistance as you unscrew the plugs (8mm bolts) do not proceed! Some darling engineer specified bolts which extend 5mm past the weldnuts into the spark arrestor chamber. The exposed thread quickly becomes coated with carbon, preventing removal of the bolts. Aggressive torquing will snap the heads off. (Hmmm, how does he know that?) If you have a new KLR remove the plugs immediately and cut off 5mm. P.S. Does anyone know the consequences of a plugged up spark arrestor? Clint

>> This is a good idea. Changing to shorter bolts is easier if you can get them. What I've been doing from the beginning is removing the three OEM bolts twice a year, wire brushing them and replacing them coated with a light smear of copper based anti-seize compound. They come out but you have to unscrew them gently, turning them in and out a little bit at a time. But shortened or shorter bolts would solve the problem. Take heart, though. BMW F650s, (the fuel-injected ones), which cost a ton, are having major driveability problems that dealers seem unable to easily solve. There is something to be said for simple, mature technology. Merry goddam Xmas. Thanks. Bob Kaub

you just have to get Tim or Arnie to fit you up a set of racks...they'll do most anything for a price and in Arne's case a price and a beer...Where is Arne? Kurt
