advice needed on choke

Post by Anton Perdices » Mon Nov 20, 2000 12:56 pm

Folks, The other day I tried starting my bike as normal with the choke on. This time it wouldn't turn over and just kept cranking. I cranked the throttle full and it eventually started but when on choke it was idling roughly and had white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Once I released the choke it started to idle fine with no smoke coming out. Is there a way to adjust the mixture when the choke is on cause it seems to me it is burning rich when white smoke comes out right? Now every time I try to start it with the choke on it won't turn over and in order to do so I have to give it full throttle. I don't have any problems starting it with the choke off. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks,

Nope. If it's running rich, it'll blow black smoke. If it's burning oil(as in a blown ring or leaky valve guide) it'll blow bluish/grey smoke. White smoke is either water or coolant. Don't know why it would only do this when the choke(enrichener) is engaged though. What does the smoke smell like? Things that you could check: Water in the gas tank or carb float bowl, enrichener fitting on the carb for proper mounting, Check the plug for a good color, compression test the cylinder to look for a blown head gasket allowing coolant into the cylinder. Best bet IMHO, would be water in the gas. Where has the bike been living and how long has it been idle, if at all? Joe Nassif SFNM A13

I believe the choke is actually a fuel enricher, so if you say that it is too rich with choke applied, then try giving it less choke to start. I use my choke very minimally here in Calif. and start riding the KLR as soon as it starts up and settles down a little bit. that's how I warm it up. At least you have a good strong battery, that's most important. I wish I had a backup kickstarter for dead battery syndrome, I don't care about lack of clutch basket upgrade tradeoffs. Conall

advice needed on choke

Folks, Sure enough it must have been water cause once I continued to run it filled it up with gas it started fine and this morning I put the choke on crossed my fingers and yahoo the bike was in business. Man what a ride to work though. 57 degrees. I wish I had those electric gloves...
