broken in

Post by closeke@kearney.net » Wed Oct 11, 2000 4:49 pm

I got my '01 Klr 650 about a month ago and have been trying to get broken in before winter hits. Being rather new to motorcyle riding I haven't been trying much offroad stuff yet. Today was my day off and I went exploring the backroads of the Platte river bottom. I found out that the stock tires don't like sand too well. I was doing about 10-15 mph and hit a long patch of soft sand in the road and I fought to keep it upright but no luck. I put the bike down in a big sand rut on the left handle bar and radiator. Looks like I tore off the left plastic handguard and plastic piece on the radiator. The radiator looks alittle bent and the fan no longer is working. The most ironic thing about this is that I ordered a set of radiator guards and a brush guard from Happy Trails last week which I have not gotten yet. Live and learn I guess. Craig A15

broken in

haha, similar to what happened to me last weekend. in my case here's what i did: 1. fan housing was bent until fan blades touched. i removed the fan (take off sidepanels, seat and gas tank to get to it), and manually straightened out the housing enough to clear. 2. radiator was bent on its mounts. i just straightened it by hand. 3. mount for fan and mount for radiator shroud were bent in opposite directions, so fan stuck out past radiator, and shroud stuck close to fan. i pretty much straightened them with pliers so the fan no longer stuck out past the radiator, and the shroud now clips back into its little plughole thingy. presto, bike as good as new. the klr is pretty heavy for sand. use low tire pressure, keep your weight back, and give it some gas. mw
