happy trails radiator guards interfering with forks?

Post by Tom Vervaeke » Mon Oct 09, 2000 4:18 pm

Brian (BCSavWill@...) in a previous message was talking about the Happy Trails radiator guards:
>>I also ordered the other side guard but mine fouls the forks on full >>lock imparting a twisting moment to the rail that is already there, >>so I took it off. The fan side one does the job good.
Brian: Did you contact Tim at Happy Trails about this? I was planning on asking Santa Spouse to add the Happy Trails fork brace and radiator protectors to my Xmas list. I've not heard from anyone else about the problems with the right guard fouling on the forks. Would like to hear what the vendor said about that. Also, how do the guards fasten to the bike? another first valve adjustment question....

Post by Ed Snow » Mon Oct 09, 2000 4:24 pm

-=* 500 mile First Valve Adjustment *=- Hello all, Just so everyone doesn't think me lazy, I searched the archive for "Shim" and read through as many as I could stand before my brain starged getting fuzzy. I didn't see the answer to my questions. What I am wondering is, how do you know what shims you need? I have checked my clearances and they are: L-Intake .004 R-Intake .005 L-Exh. .005 R-Exh. .006 I figured before venturing any further into the unknown depts of -Valve Shimology- or removing my old shims, I should get the correct shims for replacement. Does the KLR come with a "Stock" size? Are they all stamped with the size#, and I just need to snag them suckers out and read'em??? Is there more than one shim in the ole' "Shim Bucket"? BTW: I already have "Buy the Service Manual" on my list, and I have read the KLR650 Valve Adjustment page by Eldon Carl.

I found 3 shims sized 255 and 1 at 260 when I did mine (so maybe 255 is stock since I bought the bike used). If you've already got it apart to measure, just pop 'em out and look at the underside. It should give the size. From there just know that they are sized by 5 (ie. 255,260,265) and each size is a difference of .002" Good luck, dat brooklyn bum _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html
