bent radiator

Post by Weaver, Mark » Mon Oct 09, 2000 12:56 pm

i know i'm not the first guy to tip over in the rocks and send my radiator to a new location. it happended at the ridge runner 500, on the first day. i ended up finishing the ride, but when i noticed that fan wasn't spinning, i disconnected it, then saturday nite i took stuff apart, bent the fan housing back into an approximation of a circle, and tried to put the radiator back where it should be. i was rewarded with an alarming 'crack' sound, so i stopped trying. the radiator feels fairly loose, so i think i mighta just cracked a mounting bracket or something. i haven't torn into it yet (it survived another 400 miles of riding yesterday, so it can't be that bad), but the radiator is still sitting out far enough that the shroud won't fit into it's little press-in hole. so any ideas what to expect when i tear it apart? anyone else had to buy new mounting brackets for the radiator due to a similar fall? am i likely to need to drain the coolant and entirely remove the radiator to get in there and fix stuff? thanks for the help. mark weaver

Hi Mark I did much the same some time ago. Tripped over a sunken tree root and dumped it rad. side down and bent it all and broke the fan blade, but it did not leak. I sent it to: Myler's 8414 So. McDowell Ct. West Jordan UTAH 84088 1-800-367 7699 I got a one day turn round, $35 bill and a fixed rad. Give them a call. I was happy. BTB New rad List $311.98 New fan List $309.98 You can get an upgraded fan blades from Fred, for about $65 I think. Also I have now fitted a fan side guard from Happy Trails (20/20 hind sight). I also ordered the other side guard but mine fouls the forks on full lock imparting a twisting moment to the rail that is already there, so I took it off. The fan side one does the job good. I ride all year long (but not everyday). It never gets all that cold in Western Washington...just wet. For the ton of high tech clothing I have bought I saved a fortune at Sierra Trading Post. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/ Ric Merry 97ZG1KLRR650A7 Living in the land of REI but can't afford them.
