looking for eric from portland

Yo all, This is my first email of the list, hopefully not the last. I am a new rider-to-be currently, 18 yrs old from Fort Worth, TX., and suddenly got a bug in me to get a DP. Tired of the POS Chevy Monte Carlo of mine, so I decided to get a bike, since I want to get to work in the morning (15-18 miles, 10 at 65mph freeway), and want to keep up with my friend's jeep on a local trail, as well as go down to marti gras in february, as well as all over america(ya!). So, I searched high and low, did my research, asked my retired-rider pop what he had, and what he would recommend, and came to the KLR. All the reviews I have found seem to count this as the best all around bike for what I'm thinkin of, with little-to-no gripes about it. Such a review site led me here! Unfortunately for me, my paycheck just got dumped into my car repairs, car insurance, and signing up for a motorcycle training course. So I must wait a few more paychecks to build up a deposit, as well as find a nice financing option.(hopefully get pop to buy it in his name, rates come back down to just 'insanely high' instead of 'hahahaha!'). So, I am doomed to more research, as well as more option-hunting. Which brings me to my first question set. Is it worthwhile to buy a used KLR for cash? I have been weighing the issues of lower insurance vs. sucker factor, and am stumped. And, if it is worth it, does anyone have an idea of a particular year I should look for? Also, a '97 review said the KLR had a bad gearbox, with some bonus neutrals. Has that been fixed in the 00/01s? And while I'm thinkin bout it, does anyone know of any biker clubs in the D/FW area for DP's or somethin a teenager might be interested in? Thanks DXK
