noises driving me nuts
Has anyone experienced a wheezing/light tinny noise on light to
mid acceleration? It seems to come from the engine and I have ruled
out the drive chain although it is hard to pinpoint. It also seems
more common as the engine gets warmer. Any thoughts out there?

I have exactly the noise you describe on my brand spanking new 2001. Only
makes the noise when warm and in mid to high rev range. Started making the
noise at 265 miles. So I bop over to the dealer's place and the mechanic's
diagnosis is "it's vibration oriented, not from inside the engine so ignore
it and maybe we'll see something when you bring it back for the 600 mile
checkup." Things I've eliminated myself include: fan shroud, clutch lever,
and heat shield on exhaust pipe. I'm getting a stethoscope this weekend to
explore further. I swear I'm gonna crash while riding down the road with my
head under the left handlebar listening to this wheezy-rattling thing.

Brad,
I too have that wheezing noise. It almost sounds like a whistling noise. It
seems to happen on every exhaust fart, especially when warm. For some time I
thought that it might be an improperly closing exhaust valve. At this point I
think the wheezing noise might be an accustical issue with the exhaust system, .
. having to do with the path through the ports in the muffler end. I can't
think of anything else. It does not have an effect on performance on my A-14.

Sometimes the shield plate on the exhaust pipe can vibrate in the same frequency as the engine. But that is easy to check by putting the right foot on the plate when the noise happens. If noise stops, that's it. If noise is on the left side from inside the engine it can be the cam chain noise, which is normal at certain rpm (light to mid). It even depends on the oil (oooops, again) in which the chain "takes a bath". Some oils allow more noise to be heard than others. If you dont have a stetoscope, you can check with a large screwdriver. Put the screwdriver head at the place you suspect noise is coming from, form a cone with your palm around the handle and put the ear close to the top of the handle. You will be able to hear almost every noise coming from the place you put the screwdriver head. I wish you good luck in finding the noise source. But if the bike runs fine, dont be such a perfectionist. Try to get to like the noise. Good riding on noisy bikes, Deks, Croatia PS. Imagine a woman who doesn't make any noise when you ride her. That simply wouldn't be it. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com Share information about yourself, create your own public profile at http://profiles.msn.com>stephen easter wrote: Has anyone experienced a wheezing/light tinny >noise on light to > mid acceleration? My A13 developed a similar noise a while back. It turned out to be the socket that plugs into the back of the headlight. You might check there, you never know... Anyone else had this problem? I've just learned to live with it, and it has become intermittant here lately. It happens when the engine is revved typically, and while traveling at mid range rpm.

The mesh radiator gaurd on mine would vibrate against the radiator,
so
I sliced one side of some vent hose and put along the perimeter of
the
mesh.

Peter,
My KLR (A-14) started that whistle noise too. I took it to the Dealer and inquired, and they said that it is some sort of issue in the muffler and wouldn't hurt anything. If anything, it's sort of annoying, but doesn't seem to be a problem. My brother and friend also bought an A-14 the same time I did in February of this year and theirs are making the same noise. All three of our bikes started the whistling around 9,000 miles or so. If you find there is a problem, or the muffler can be replaced under warranty please let me know. I've since ridden another 4,000 miles, including a ride to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, so I assume there is no mechanical issue, only one of acoustics.
