transcontinental adventure touring [offlist]

Chris Ellidge: I will use The Milepost book from Whitehorse Press for western Canada and Alaska travel info. and will be traveling highways and gravel roads on the maps. There is a road, Mackenzie Highway, from Edmonton to Hay River/Yellowknife and loops back down to Fort Nelson and the Alaska Highway, then west to the Campbell Highway to the Klondike Highway to near Dawson City then up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik or you could go through Whitehorse on the way to Inuvik. Get the Milepost, it is loaded with info. There are even websites listed in the Milepost, although their info. is mostly not motorcycle specific, they do give some info. for riders. All the mile by mile road and camping info. is there. I intend to be in Canada and Alaska June, July and August, 2001. Thanks for the offer of a place to stay in Virginia. Steve Pye, in Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada sent me e-mail this evening and invited me to see him up there and offered assistance in planning or service in his area. If this keeps up it could save lodging expenses and wear and tear on me and the camping gear. You guys do understand I have my Yorkie "Punky" with me? Where I go my little buddy goes. Thanks to both of you guys for your kind offers. I will be in touch as things progress toward the May 1, 2001, departure date and intend to be active here online. Feel free to contact me anytime. I haven't used it, but we could try the chat thing through this website if you want. I am retired and have nothing better to do than dream, plan my tour and learn all I can, through research, about adventure touring with a klr650. Happy trails. Peter B: You are the third to offer lodging and/or assistance (1 American, 2 Canadian) in the past 24 hours. I REALLY like this list/group! It will be great to visit with like-minded KORGs and take a break from camping once in a while. I am printing copies of all such offers and will be in touch before I go. I will also be regularly checking in here online. Thanks comrade. It's not a communist thing. Lew Waterman Punky & Lew's Americas Motopaseo

Chris: I have called Hosteling Intl, and been told my dog presents a problem. I will be traveling roads for the most part, but you know why we ride dual sports, because when the pavement ends or the conditions get rough we can go where Harleys and Gold Wings can't. The extreme load I will be carrying will make off road riding tough, but not impossible. If you go slow you can make it almost anywhere. I probably will find places where I can safely leave most of the stuff and venture offroad for extra fun then return to pick up my stuff. All of the consulates for the countries I will go to have assured me there will be no quarantine for my Yorkie "Punky" as long as I have an International Health Certificate from a vet, a USDA endorsement and a paper from each country's consulate before entering. I am going to try going without insurance or Carnet for the bike. I will use my American proof of insurance since local insurance is outrageously expensive. It has worked for Dr. Gregory Frasier in most of Latin America except for Belize and that was probably because they were the only ones who could read English. Frasier paid about $20 I think for a week or two in Belize. I also liked Frasier's idea to use a dummy second wallet with only the days cash (about $50) in it, copies of documents and expired credit/debit cards to reduce risk of loss when robbed. I will hide the important stuff and major cash in various places so that even if some gets lost I won't lose everything at once. Two different Visa debit cards will be my major means of accessing funds at the best exchange rates. Thanks again for your interest and kind offer. Lew Waterman Punky & Lew's Americas Motopaseo

i want my klr

well, its been about 3 months that i have been klr-less. the 84 honda cb700 nighthawk i bought is a great and fun bike, but i miss my klr. i think its much better for city commuting, has much better fuel economy, and best of all, is not intimidated by curbs, pot holes and other urban obsticals. so i finally have a weekend free and im gonna do all i can to get the beast back on 2 wheels again (aside from taking it to the dealer). wish me luck! ill probably be emailing with questions as they come up so be ready! thanks dan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Peter B: Got your phone numbers. Probably be up that way sometime in June 2001. Meanwhile, I will be right here online nearly everyday. I responded to a classifieds website, where some guy was selling Tim Bernard side racks. I E-mailed him asking if they were SU racks with the rear crossbar and told him if they were I would buy them and cancel my order to Tim B. Tim is supposed to call me back to finalize details concerning my order. I asked Tim to put a 30-45% degree cut angle on the outside bottom edge of the aluminum panniers because I want to mount them lower than usual to accommodate the inverted U-shape Rev Pack duffle bag, which hangs down 6 inches on each side above the panniers. I trust that will keep the panniers of the ground when leaning in corners. I want to use the duffle bag as a back rest between me and the Mondo 55 litre tail box. I will put light stuff in the tail box and leave room in it to stow my helmet and leathers when not wearing them. Hopefully, I can adequately balance the weight fore an aft. Somebody asked what stove I will use -- it's a MSR international multifuel. Thanks again amigo for the invite. Lew Waterman Punky & Lew's Americas Motopaseo
