Sounds like maybe the cable is hanging up inside the sheath, it might even be frayed. I guess it could be the gears at either end but since you had them apart I would tend to doubt that. Ed Windsor Oh

YUP! There's a Galvanometer under there and spikes are typically due to a ground short but that usually results in a spike in the opposite direction rather than UP. ??? LaterZ Dash

Obviously I didn't think so. I do not own a KLR although I will in the next three weeks. I guess I should shut up if I'm not sure, but the symtoms sounded like symptoms i'd experienced with other bikes. Ed Red Faced in Windsor Oh

Hi Mike, Thanks.... The tach is actually pretty low on the "to do" list and it might just fix itself.... We'll see. LaterZ Dash

Dash,   Mine did that for 3 or 4 days, last Spring, then my CDI died.  After the CDI was replaced, under warranty,  the tach worked normal again.   Robert A13
----- Original Message -----  Greetings Borg, I'm finally starting to get the real bugs out of this bike.  I've beaten them into submission and now they are all showing up.  My trail riding is utter torture to my poor bike but that's what I bought it for. Anyhow,  just since this weekend (which was especially grueling for Da' Bomb) I've noticed my Tach not working properly.  I haven't pulled anything apart yet but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. Here's the deal... I accelerate up to about 3K-3.5K RPM and then the tach decides that it wants to dance.  It bounces all over the place, never below 3K-3.5K RPM but all the way pinned in redline and everywhere in between.  Just bouncing around.  If I get it back below 3K then it behaves again. Any thoughts?  Any Cures?  Anyone? laterZ Dash

Jim that's not the right answer. Darn.. I don't wanna buy a new one. How Broke? Can a person of reasonable mechanical/electrical ability repair it? HHMMMMM..... Where can I find one of those? :) Thanks Again.... I think you are right though and that was my suspicion. I've just been hammering my bike and while my teeth haven't rattled loose on the trail, I'm not surprised that certain parts of my bike are throwing a fit. I better get a BMW eh? Anyone rigged up a digital RPM-o-meter yet? LaterZ Dash

Oh O... HHHMMM.... This could get ugly. Is there a way to test the CDI? What other symptoms would be noticed? Perhaps a sputtering and bucking at RPMs greater than say 4K? I thought perhaps I got some stuff clogged in my Carby, and was gonna clean it soon. Maybe I'm just not getting the correct firing and the gas isn't the problem. Damn BUGS!! Thanks a ton Robert, I probably would have found a clean carb and then proceeded to shave my head with a dull pencil or something. ???? LaterZ Dash

Dash,   You can test the CDI with an ohmmeter and the table on page 14-10 of the Service Manual Supplement.  Mine did buck above 5K before it quit.  If you don't have the Supplement and need the table, let me know.   Robert A13
