Next time switch bikes. The better rider will get it done..... or better bike, or tire or whatever the trail conditions best suit. But, you will come away with a better feel for what you and your bikes capabilities are. I think one of the most dangerous things to let happen is to get "sucked-in* by trying to keep up with a more skilled rider or better bike. Knowing and riding within your limits is the key to success. Riding *over your head* is part of the limit finding process - have measured fun! In the dirt, limit finding is usually a pretty painless process, on the pavement it can be deadly. I can go 10/10 in the dirt and deal with the circumstances, but seldom do I ride more than 8/10 on the pavement - it aint worth it to me ......they can wait. As far as getting up hills, I always try to let momentum carry me to the top......carry the speed as much as possible, in other works -- hit'em hard. Just because you are on a big bore thumper doesn't mean that you up can grunt up a big hill with loose dirt and rocks. The xr-l 2nd gear is pretty tall, I doubt that is it. The xr-l does make great low end power. More than you prolly wanted to hear. Sorry. Knot
