Whacking at the bearing (where you pound on the inner race, and the hammer blows transfer thru the balls into the outer race) is a bad idea, if you're trying to extend the life of your bearings. I suggest you simply dig the seal out and pack it from the outside. Don't worry about getting the bearings out. Just pack some more grease in and pop the seals back in.
