I worded my message poorly. I should have specified that when I ride in southeastern Utah, I am at times 50 miles or more from the nearest pavement on 4WD roads that require frequent use of low gear. One gear operation, an obvious option, isn't a good option in that situation. I should have said that you can't realistically use vice grips as a substitute, foot-operated shift lever on a KLR like you could on some older motorcycles. Verle Nelson Cedaredge, CO
