True story: While coming off a mountain, I encountered a large woman staggering down the gravel road. As I stopped, she burst into tears. She was exhausted. She was an Appalachian Trail hiker and had become lost earlier that day. It was now late in the evening. After she regained her composure, I pointed to my GPS and explained that I had a poor sense of direction and the GPS was a good supplement to a compass. She pulled out her maps and I showed her where she was. I ask about her compass and she relied, "My friends said I didn't need one as long as I stayed on the trail." I was so taken by her reply that I promptly fell over breaking a $28 mirror. I took her picture and said I would mail it to her for a keep-sake. She gave me her address and said not to mention anything about getting lost as her parents would be reading her mail in the coming months. Her last name was "North" - I kid you not. I gave her my compass and wished her luck. Knot

I was happy as Larry with my GPS system until I tried my first big highway adventure ride. A 1100 mile round trip in two days over the Sierras, death Valley , Vegas etc. The vibration of the KLR kept destroying the contacts on the batteries when the bike was run at 80MPH for any period of time. I ended up going back to manual navigation.I am working on a solution to the otherwise reliable GPS. Regs Mark KLR650 --- Steve Anderson wrote:

I don't have one yet but this new thin profile Garmin looks very cool. The database of information that can be downloaded into them now is phenomenal. Plus this new unit seems so portable. I am starting to see a lot of ways one of these issues could eliminate a lot of hassles. Last year we rented a houseboat on one of the TVA lake that is just a collection of flooded canyons and I ran down several dead ends because it all looked the same. Nobody was in danger but it had me backtracking this slow ass awkward barge with jack shit for a keel out of more than one dead end. They obviously need some type of redundancy for a safety net but one aspect of safety I think they would provide is navigating on the street in unfamiliar places, especially when traveling for business. I remember years ago driving through a snowstorm in Milwaukee during the evening rush with my laptop on the seat beside me, track balling my way through a mapping software trying to find the burb I was headed to for the next days meeting. I had flown to O'Hare and the rental car map didn't extend that far. Sure, I should have stopped but if I had one of these new units could be easily slipped into the briefcase and I could have plugged in the address of the hotel and the meeting before I left home and it would have shown me the way with an illuminated screen. I think the new databases would have even shown me what exit the good burgers were at. Mark McCoy Steve Anderson wrote:

I have not had this kind of problem with the Garimin Emap or 12Map. Which GPSs are you guys using and how do you mount them? Don

I have a 12 map and it does it. My bike runs real smooth but at sustained 80 mph there is enough vibration to cause the battery ends to arc and lose continuity. I have since mounted a 12v socket so as to avoid this problem. My 12 map is mounted on the handlebars with a touratech mount. If yours is on top of a tank bag you may not experience the same bad vibes. Morgan

Re: [DSN_klr650] Re: OffRoad survival kit & spares, NK Geez.... how would you choose?  So many tires, so little time.  I'd say MT-21 for longevity, even if they are squirrely in the gravel.... Tom ======================
What's your favorite tire for that method? [quote]
