Dust, One reason is the base pour point is lower, which you would see as being a little thinner than normal weight mineral oils. Also, synthetics have shorter chain molecules, which act like a ball of yarn, they`re tight when cool, but as the temperatures increase, they stretch and unwind, increasing the density and viscosity the hotter it gets. That`s how all multi-grades work, but while shorter than they used to be, the chain molecules are still longer in mineral oil than in synthetics. Because of this, synthetics are ideal in cold weather, cold engine starts since the polymer chains are so tight, flowing easier thus lubricating quicker at start up. Sorry. I couldn`t help it.
