klr650: valve questions

Post by John Laybolt » Mon May 08, 2000 6:27 pm

Hi All, Well, since were on the subject, a couple questions about shim removal. (Thanks for the valve clearance advice) 1- exactly what has to be done to the cam chain tensioner to remove shims on an A14? 2-Do the cams have to come out? Can I just remove the cam caps and get the shims out by lifting the cam a little? 3-does the upper cam chain slipper bracket have to come off? I suspect it will if I'm going to take out the cams(ouch!) 4-what holds a shim in that little cup? is it just that a shim is too thick to slip out under the cam lobe? 5-how much force is required to lift out a shim? Will they take off flying across the room when you pry them out? or is it a gentle lift thats required? Thanks again. I'm sure the second time around this procedure will be much less intimidating. Maybe someday I'll even be able to return some helpful advice. ++Oh yeah, watch out for green chrysler/dodge minivans. They seem to have some magical attraction to motorcycles - they head directly for me. Whenever I see one of these I get away as swiftly as possible, don't even park by one. Some other colors are bad too but green is the worst by far. (no offence to anyone if you should own one) Ford, GM etc. minivans do not seem to exhibit this attraction property. Perhaps I should ask chrysler what they do to them... John A14 96 Bandit 80 LTD __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo!
