[dsn_klr650] trail bike
very little experience so far, but i just made a similar search. the bike is
(ostensibly) for my wife, so the electric start pushed me over the top on
the xt225. here's a good article on it
http://www.ionet.net/~jhanna/Serow.html.
i've only briefly ridden the bike, but it seems so easy it's like cheating.
admittedly, we didn't get it for gonzo fat air, or rocketing over the desert
at 50mph, but for my wife to learn on (that's my claim), and for taking on
rocky woodsy narrow trails where i need a light, durable, easy to ride bike
(when my wife isn't looking).
i'm quite impressed with the smoothness and power of the engine for getting
to and fro. it's a fairly small bike for me (6'2"), but i don't think that's
necessarily bad.
another possible option, especially if you can get a used dirt only thumper
like an xr250, or klx300 or similar, is to street-legalize it via a baja
designs kit. i have no experience with their stuff, but i've heard at least
1 good report. at any rate, whether the lighting stuff works or not doesn't
really matter if you're only going to ride to/from riding areas in daylight,
eh? and most of the dirt-only bikes are lighter and better suspended than
their dual-purpose cousins. if i can't get my wife to relinquish her xt225
when she gets some experience, i may look for a dirt-only thumper for
conversion.

only in my dreams I'm afraid...my doctor just told me that shrinkage is very common as we get older...afterall I've been nearly 5'10 all my life and now I'm only 5 81/2"...and that is only part of the problem...(g) Kurt> > Sarah mentioned she may have difficulty getting motorcycle parts > > from men when > > she's old.
