I've heard it stated that you should replace every 5 to 7 years.
I have a Bell full-face bought with my 1st new bike in 1986 that I still use
when I ride my quad.
But all my road helmets are no older than 3 yrs.
I usually replace because of wear and tear (scratches), and not necessarily
because they're old.
I did replace an Aria that hit the ground in a minor accident that was only
1 1/2 years old.
But I figure that since I didn't even have a headache, the $400 helmet did
it's job.
Best $400 I ever spent, in my opinion.
I personally feel, that since it's your head, you'd want max protection.
