quick sprocket question

So I've never removed the big nut holding on the front sprocket on my 98 A12. Once I get an appropriate wrench, I assume I'll need to have the chain and rear wheel on the bike, and use the rear brake to "hold" the countershaft, so it doesn't just spin when I wrench the big nut??
