I am wondering if someone out there can help me? I am embarking on a
restoration of a 1948 (supposedly) MGTC that is essentially original.
Stored since 1963 --- it is complete and only a very bad paint job has
been added. I have read much about the firewall and foot panel color.
Here is what I have found on mine. I took off the fuel pump and voltage
regulator. I also removed the builder's plates etc. Under all of
these the color is --- a medium army green. This is what is under the
lid on the tool box and battery areas as well. The engine however, is
medium gray. No green to be found that I can see. Numbers match and
everything in good shape. I can not be sure that the engine hasn't
been painted and rebuilt. There is evidence that pistons were replaced
as a used set was left in the car. So--- the body was black and the
interior red. What is the correct color for the firewall and engine?
I bought paint from Bill Hirsh in Hemmings and the color matches that on
my car --- but it was sold to me as engine paint. Latest word?

It would be helpful to have the chassis number, but I have a March 1948
build TC that has the same colors you describe. The engine is a very dark grey,
not medium grey but the scuttle is a very definite "army green". I used the
underside of the tool box lid to formulate the paint for the scuttle.

Joel,

There is some difference of opinion on engine and bulkhead colors on
early TCs. BTW, the dividing between early and late TCs seems to be
around TC5000 in March 1948. So your car could be a '48 or a '47 sold
in '48 which would be the norm in 1948 in the US.

What is your intended use for the car? If you anticipate councours
competition, check with the judging association and find out what colors
they deem correct. Otherwise, I would suggest picking the colors you
like and don't worry about it. Badger drove a TC with a pink engine for
years and from what I hear, it ran just as well as a gray or green or MG
red engine.

Would that be the pink Volvo engine??
BTW, there is a guy with a Chevy engine in a TC here in town. I invited him
to join us. He and Badger can swap swapping stories. :-)

Dear Joel:

Last year, a friend and I restored a '48 (TC/5312), and we used Sherrell's bible as a guide. Mr. Sherrell says that, among other changes, firewalls changed from "green" to body color, engines went from green to red, and dashboards changed from wood to Rexene-covered between car #s 5000 and 5800. This gave us lots of leeway. We went with a body-colored firewall, wood dash and red engine.

Bottom line - There doesn't appear to be any "correct combination" (at least according to Sherrell) for this range of TCs, so do what you like, because if your TC falls in this range, who can argue with you?
