Hello,
I am new to the list and of course I have some questions. I have
read the FAQs.
I have an opportunity to swap my 1990 CBR1000F for a 1999 KLR650.
The Kelly Blue Book website has these bikes similarly priced.
The KLR was damaged when it was stolen and damaged parts were
replaced by e-bay acquired parts & the paint does not match. It has
a new gas tank and handlebars. Pictures of the bike show it to be
very clean and I have been assured it is mechanically sound.
I have done a little homework on the KLR but the main concern I have
is that it has a salvage title. I am not certain I understand what
this means. I would imagine it has to do with resale value etc.
What else should I be concerned about?
Thanks,
Robert Bashaw

My A3 has a salvage title; I don't care. I bought it to use, not to look at the bike or its title. Resale value on KLRs isn't great, you should buy it to use it. It will provide lots of use. It's a very practical and usable motorcycle, and will dust sportbikes easily in the hands of even a novice, on a bumpy tight and twisty road. That part is really fun. It's not a polisher's bike. What else should you know? Well, doohickeys need inspection and likely replacement - no big deal. Steel footpegs are worth their weight in steel. Ugly KLRs are usually the best looking KLRs. I have other bikes but life without a KLR to me sounds sort of difficult. Bill A3 R1100RS Cagiva Alazzurra 650 one stinky dog and one that doesn't smell quite so bad> is that it has a salvage title. No matter what the story on how the salvage title came to be, if it were my money I would not touch a bike with a salvage title. Technically a salvage title means an insurance company has 'totaled' the bike. For consumer protection states force insurance companies to transfer ownership under a salvage title to indicate the bike is nothing but a pile of spare parts. So, no, with crash damage, cosmetically poor repair, and a salvage title, the blue book values don't match. But so what. As someone has already pointed out, buying a KLR and trying to "preserve your investment" is a fools errand. Try to get some cash in addition to the KLR, spend the money on brakes, suspension tweaks, bash plates, handguards, etc.... Test ride the bike in question. Make damn sure it isn't bent. Make sure you don't mind the lack of power compared to your CB, because there is little you can do about it. The only really high-performance aspect of a KLR is crash performance. It's one of the toughest bikes I've ever seen. With some minor $$$ spent on bash plating and guards, you can really dish out the abuse. The KLR will get uglier and uglier, but keep wheezing along. If you don't mind being a few minutes off the pace, you can chug along the same trails as "real" dirtbikes on all but real A-rider terrain. And then ride for hours on the highway in relative comfort. As long as it has been registered and passed inspection, I don't think the salvage title matters until you sell it. So plan to ride it into the ground. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." I *think* the insurance companies generally total a bike if the repairs will cost more than 40% of the value of the bike or something like that. Break an instrument cluster and bend a wheel, add a few broken plastics, and you have a totalled KLR that is still perfectly functional.... Unlike my totalled bike which has a slightly bent frame (but still technically functional). dat brooklyn bum (If I ever sold this bike, the classified would read something like this: KLR650 for sale. Owned by an adult who rides like a teenager. Maintained extremely well but rarely washed. Been down more times than a crack whore. Rarely ridden on road, unless it was to get to the dirt. Trust me, you CANNOT do anything to this bike that it hasn't already survived... )> > Technically a salvage title means an insurance company

It wouldn't bother me at all to buy a bike with a salvage title----I would
just check it out real well and pay way less than what it books for-----and
ride it till the wheels (or doohickey) falls off !!

Were out there, but were usually riding the unpaved roads and 2 track.

I just bought a new 2005 KLR650 and love it. I live in Utah and I'm
interested in finding other Utahn's who like to ride. If you have time
and need a riding partner let me know. This has been a great group to
gather information and hope to continue to be apart of it for a long
while.
