winter gloves

Post by SniperOne » Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:35 am

Thanks for the clarification Gerry. My apologies for the delay in response, yet you ve received some good suggestions in the interim. For temps to about 50 degrees I have found this glove to work well, it s not overly expensive, and it is wind/water proof, with a soft leather palm that isn t difficult to break in. The cuff is large enough to easily go over my sleeve and the best part is the pull loop on the cuff that makes it simple to put the glove on and go over the sleeve in one smooth motion. The second best part is the double pull design for tightening the glove cuff around the jacket sleeve. Pull one side to tighten and the other side to loosen, even with gloved hands. http://www.outdoorresearch.com/en/mens-revolution-gloves-1.html I ve found all my Klim gear to work well and I usually wait for it to show up on a clearance sale to reduce cost. Their Fusion glove (someone on the list suggested snowmobile gear) is interesting in that it is wind proof/water proof yet has an extra internal layer of insulation that you can move from being on the palm side to being on the back of the hand side, depending on where you want the additional warmth. It is warmer than the above glove I suggested and takes me to about 40 degrees comfortably. A few months ago they did a clearance on last year s model and I found a few of them listed on a Google search. This is an example (I know nothing about this specific seller). http://www.kenssports.com/eshopprod_cat_9081-114186_product_1857084.Klim_Black_FUSION_Snowmobile_G.htm Several on the list have suggested the handle bar mitt solution, Hippo Hands being a specific brand. About a year ago I was looking for them and found their website noting they had decided to close their doors. I just did another search and found they are (still/again) making bar mitt type solutions, yet I note the logo on the new sight has one of the P s turned backward from the way it was previously spelled. Perhaps new owners? I have an original set of Vetter Hippo Hands that were awesome on my Gold Wing many years ago, yet I wanted something that would fit my KLR last year. I eventually picked up a pair of these and made some modifications. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/55801/i/bikemaster-hand-mitts The issues I have with most of the mitt designs are, getting them threaded onto the bar end over the hand guard, and the difficulty of getting my hand in and out of the tunnel to the hand grips. So with the above Bikemaster Mitt I split the main seam open full length of the mitt so I no longer have to thread it over the bar end and hand guard. It s easy to position it and use the hook and loop strips to hold the end near the bar clamps. I then use the bungie/ball loop from WalMart to overlap the material round the bar and secure it closer to the grip side. It takes me less than 30 second to put a set on my bike or move them to another bike. The last alteration I did was to take the side where my hand goes in and fold 6 of it over to the inside of the mitt, then sew it down around the folded end completely. What this produced when on the bike is a sort of short cuff bar mitt that makes it easy for me to get my hand on and off the grips, plus it is more open so I can easily see my controls with my hand on the bar. With the above bar mitt set-up on my GSA (heated grips) I can wear a summer glove with a SmartWool Liner (http://www.smartwool.com/shop/liner-gloves-sw0sc300 ) down to about 25 degrees. With the mitts on the KLR (no heated grips) I can go to about 25 degrees if I wear the warmer glove suggested above. I noted some on the list suggested heated gear. There is a world of difference when this option is selected, IF the bike you are riding has the capacity to run it all. I know several riders who have done heated grips on Gen 1 bikes without issues. I tried to run a jacket on my Gen 1 and drained the battery in about 30 minutes of riding. I did find I could manage to run a pair of Cycle Gear heated gloves, if I ran them on the low heat setting (which was really warm). I picked these gloves because they have built in individual controllers in each glove (just run the wire from coax plug through your jacket arms and to the gloves). My Gen 2 KLR has a little more electricity to spare but still not enough for my heated jacket liner (I can run all of it on my GSA if I want). Something to assess with electric gloves is where on the hand (or how much of the hand) actually has heat applied to it. Some gloves only do the finger tips, others the back of the hand, others still do the sides/tips of the fingers and the back of the hand. Depending on your length of ride the battery powered glove design may be an option. I have not tried them but see them from a couple of makers. Let us know which direction you go and how well it works for you. It's about halfway between Eugene and Roseburg, just west of I-5. A smaller amount of my riding is done in the rain, or when it's below 40 degrees F. I would like to have gloves that are adequate for those conditions, or worse, when traveling. I prefer gloves over mittens. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

winter gloves

Many thanks to all who answered my query. Thanks also to Chris for the winter riding advice. I prefer gloves over mittens, I have some other brand's version of Hippo Hands, but Hippo Hands and heated clothing are probably more than I need. I may go with heated grips at some point, I have them on an '01 Concours and really like them. For now, I think I'll try the Klim Fusion Snowmobile Glove that Randy recommended.

3 SEASON HELP! Merino wool Glove LINERS. Thin like Silk, at surprisingly adds a good 10dig.  I carry them in my Coat pocket or Tail-box pack SMALL. Spring & Fall when temps are hot, but when the Sun DROPS THEY HELP ALOT. On Friday, January 15, 2016 5:54 PM, "Gerry gerryponline@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
