gps for on and off-road

The GPS 76, 60, and GPS 276 can be hard wired into the bike and do not need the bulky car cigarette lighter adapter..  They will run off of 12 volts.  From what I found out last year, the latest iteration of the venerable GPS 76--the GPS78 still has the waterproof NMEA plug in the back and will take 12V,  That is probably the most compelling reason to use one of these units  VS some of the newer GPS units which use a small USB port for power and have been problematic and need an adapter for 4.5 V.  The hand held GPS units which use AA batteries should be run empty and powered from the bike. to prevent the battery contacts from breaking off or making a bad connection (the weak point of these units when used on a dirt bike.)
A lot of people bad mouth Garmin, but they still have the best overall system and tech support.  You have to pay for that.  Many users mean that different maps will be needed whether backpacking, boating, driving, or even flying.  It works extremely well for a variety of users.  It takes some education, and has a learning curve.  Making/sharing your own routes and tracks in Mapsource, and then going out and riding them have really revolutionized back country travel.  I would have never attempted the Trans-America Trail solo without complete confidence that I knew exactly where I was going.  You might say I would bet my life on it.  I had a buddy who was big on the cell phone navigation apps.  He was not too happy when he got somewhere with no cell coverage and found out that the navigation no longer works.

This is nice to know.First time I ever heard/suggested you should remove the batteries...when powered by 12v source.I would think the batteries would act as a buffer for changes of charging voltage; but maybe there is internal safeties for that function. Old age and aging GPS:My 2008 76csx screen is starting to lose some screen pixels...looks like mold, and it is 1/2 the size of a dime missing in the middle of the screen. sigh. and no one fixes such things and Garmin no longer supports the internals, etc Earlier,I nearly fainted when I pulled the trigger on the purchase...didn't feel so bad after looking at the price for a 276...which really was a better application asking it to 'route' to a place from here to the desired location...plus the HUGE screen. But I learned to use and love the 76. Sadly, it is dying, but such is life. Sadly, the manufactures decide how long the will offer product support; IMO it is NOT long enough based on the entry price to use their equipment I really don't want to learn how to use another piece of gear...when this Garmin 76csx breathes its last.m1

The older 76, 60 series, etc. are considered the ultimate moto GPS platform.  However, there are no updates available for these units, no repairs by Garmin and require the use of Map Source software.  Map Source is no longer being updated as Garmin now uses Base Camp program.  Also memory capacity for these older units are very limited.  To buy one of these units is not practical for future uses.  Truly the Montana is the way to go and GPS City will sell you a complete moto bundle including the Ram mounts and they have an ADV coupon/discount.  Of corse the MOntana can be hard wired to the bike.  I purchased the Garmin Oregon since it was less expensive versus the Montana and very similar functions.  However the screen is a bit small to read while riding.  The Oregon is considered the ideal hand held unit preferred by Geo Caching folks.    One may also consider the Gamin Zumo.  This GPS is truly the Cat Daddy for auto as well as moto.  Many RTW riders use the Zumo.  www.advrider.com has a whole forum dedicated to GPS.  Just my 2 cents worth and my last 4 day camping trip in the 4 corners I used the Oregon to navigate Navajo roads that were not illustrated on any maps I had.  Link to photos:  http://ateamnm.smugmug.com/4-Corners-Labor-Day-Dual-Sport/   Ateam   From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, September 08, 2014 5:02 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: GPS for on and Off-Road

gps for on and off-road

Pic's? I seen 2 average guys & 1 UUUUUUGLY guy, And 1 Beautiful woman. What 1 are you?  PS. Sure hope you have a sense of HUMOR. LOL On Tuesday, September 9, 2014 11:31 AM, "'Ateam Consulting' ateam@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
Link to photos:  http://ateamnm.smugmug.com/4-Corners-Labor-Day-Dual-Sport/   Ateam   From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, September 08, 2014 5:02 PM To: adapter.. The hand held GPS units which use AA batteries should be run empty and powered from the bike. to prevent the battery contacts from breaking off or making a bad connection (the weak point of these units when used on a dirt bike.)   A lot of people bad mouth Garmin, but they still have the best overall system and tech support. Cheers, Doug Walker     #ygrps-yiv-995668128 #ygrps-yiv-995668128yiv0111553243 #ygrps-yiv-995668128yiv0111553243 -- gps for on and off-road

Post by Ateam Consulting » Tue Sep 09, 2014 2:35 pm

I m the really ugly guy with a stash. Check on the UUUUUUUUUUUUUGLY. One average guy at the high school is a principal and former airman Craig. The other average guy with his beautiful wife is a doctor who works on the Navajo reservations, primarily in Kayenta. JJ Lewis and his wife along with director Ron Grace in Arvada Colorado operate Lost For A Reason. All we try to do is build shelters and play grounds for broken families on the reservation. We just try to help those that live in places we love to ride. http://www.lostforareason.org/ Check this site for some nice clothing, check out what we do and maybe just maybe, you will find reason to get involved and share the word. The hand held GPS units which use AA batteries should be run empty and powered from the bike. to prevent the battery contacts from breaking off or making a bad connection (the weak point of these units when used on a dirt bike.) A lot of people bad mouth Garmin, but they still have the best overall system and tech support. Hey U. The Black T. Is the lettering on the Fr. or R.? Helping? I WILL have to look into dates etc., As a Shriner we have 22 Childrens hospitals, NO COST TO FAMILY, & Families Income is NOT an issue.   I am 1 of MANY Volunteer Drivers, 2 guys take the family (some times 2-3) to the hospital needed. (from west Mi. most likely Chicago or Cincinnati OH. but at times as needed else where, I have friends that drive to Chicago from Denver.) again NO cost to family. And As a Scottish Rite member, we have 1 on 1 Tutoring & Teacher (tutorer) training, for Dyslexia.  Bottom line,..... YES I like helping children. PS. When the Shrine Circus comes to town, It's a local found raiser.   Travel Safe! Travel Well! Mark (W. Mi.) On Tuesday, September 9, 2014 3:35 PM, "'Ateam Consulting' ateam@...
