I read a detailed article in a British bike mag earlier this year.
They used as many stock parts as possible to keep the cost down. It
looked like they basically replaced the whole top end and crank, but
kept the cases, tranny and various things like the alternator and
water pump. As I recall, the biggest challenge was the fuel injection
system, one that was small, light and effecient. The test bikes in
the article had a hard time starting.
The reason the military wants a diesel bike is because they don't
want to have to supply gasoline for their bike when everything else
runs on diesel, gets rid of a huge supply problem.
I wonder if we can get a deal on the parts they have taken off the
bike? If there isn't a warehouse full of these parts somewhere, there
will be soon when they start building the bike in production. Maybe
KHI is shipping the bikes without the parts they replace?

Give a call to Hayes Diversified Technology, they're the ones doing the re-engining. __Arden> will be soon when they start building the bike in production. Maybe > KHI is shipping the bikes without the parts they replace? > > Bryan K > A14

I was thinking of all the gas engine parts that will be available (nearly whole engines from what I can tell). Does Dual-Star have a line on those, too? __Arden> > bike? > > Bryan K > > A14 > > Give a call to Hayes Diversified Technology, they're the ones doing > the re-engining. > > __Arden >

Yup, though they don't have any of the parts yet in stock. I get the feeling that sometime in the next 6 months there are going to be a whole lot of "Dual Star Exclusives". This could be good! cheap cylinders, pistons, and heads. Maybe it's time
for serious engine tinkering, like making a shaved cylinder and a piston
with the pockets cut out a bit more, for high-compression.

Has anybody herd any "new" info on when we,(civilians) might get a
taste of the diesel jp8klr that HDT has developed? I have read
everthing I can find on the www, but no new word. I guess I could try
calling there factory but I thought I would check with the die hards
first. Keep up the great work and thanks for any info. Everett...

Read somewhere, that Civilian orders might happen, "after" all
military orders have been filled.
That would make sense, if the project was sponsered by any gummermint
funding..
And just who would market it ? Kawi ? not OEM anymore..

Just loosen your vavles alot and add some motor oil to the gas for
the smoke, and the rattling valves will make it feel like a diesel I
suspose.. just not as much torque...

Everett,
Keep us posted if you find out any further info. I would LOVE to have a
diesel KLR as I am researching home produced Biodiesel fuel right now.
What better way to run an already inexpensive KLR than on .54 cents per
gallon Biodiesel fuel.

HDT is thinking of making them availible after they've fullfilled their contractual obligations with the military. Read: several years, perhaps longer if Bush goes to war. The Sacremento Bee had a story about HDT's plans for the future, but I can't find it on their site. Maybe we should all start a letter writing campaign? I know I'd be interested in one.
