On my TD and TC I have very good results with two unknown 6 blades  plastic fan (probably BMCMidget) utilising the original bolts -no interference or balance problemsin Italy Summer days can be very hot  and my TD was afflicted by hot water over the 90 C at the prolonged  Stop by traffic light- or on Mountain roads if a stop is obligedwith this application all overheat phenomena disappaiarI added also a 12 cm Diameter, Computer Fan in the upper part of the radiator,my opinion arethat this part of the radiator work only when the car are in movement, and complete passive at the STOP, electric consumption and noise are very low and the application are easy .costs very lowon the TD the electric fans are TWO and commanded with a switchOn the TC I have immediately replaced the original metal fan with a similar  plastic 6 bladesand only one electric fan (always on)  the results are OK in all aspectsI agree Metal fans are better for the aspect BUTMetal fan weight absorb more power from the engine and weight can be a problems to the water pump bearings The original fan are completely NOT satisfying any aspect of cooling -and power absorb the  air CBM moved are derisory especially with the car in static place Il Marted 29 Maggio 2018 17:47, "'Doug Pelton' doug@fromtheframeup.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> ha scritto:   Greetings to all,  I followed the extensive discussion on using the 7 blade fan to cure the over heat problem on the XPAG.  However, if you have an over heat problem you should be looking at the root cause.  It may be you have other issues with your car.  I wrote an article a while back that can be read in TTT2;http://ttypes.org/ttt2/xpag-overheat-an-unexpected-but-common-cause  If you want to supplement your cooling then yes the 7 blade can assist.  I have this and all the other items mentioned in the article to help.  Best regards,  [b][i]Doug Pelton,[/i][/b] ProprietorFrom The Frame Up480-588-8185For Fastest Service:  order@fromtheframeup.comLike us on FACEBOOK! I fitted a seven-bladed plastic MGB fan directly onto my TC water pump without problems. I had the radiator off at the time, which allowed me to centre the fan on the boss accurately enough by eye.it produced about a 5* reduction in running temperatures, and cost very little through a well known internet site. Very pleased with it.some people paint it black to disguise it, but I have left mine yellow.Blades clear the cross frame of the radiator by about an inch. See pics. Hope this helps. GrahamTC 3107. Andrea:   As mentioned earlier this is a "to each his own" subject but it could be said that a debate built around machine dynamics could easily be made on your statement of fan weight absorbing more power from the engine and causing more bearing loading within the water pump.  A metal blade fan that does not have any imbalance issues will not affect the bearing dynamics in any appreciable form.  A minuscule increase in thrust vectoring due to two additional blades but arguably,  no more than the plastic counterpart.  Additional radial loading is essentially non existent if the fan is in balance.  Power absorption due to increased rotational weight would be insignificant over the original 4 blade unit...  So metal or plastic, plastic is more available and may or may not need a centering adjustment or spacer adjustment from what I've read while metal needs to be checked for structural integrity and requires a bit of machine work for centering and mating properly to insure balance on the TC/TD fan hub.  Your car, your choice!!!

Greetings,

Many thanks for all the replies regarding my concerns of the flat bar cross frame. I appreciate that I could have tilted the rad shell by adjusting the two fore and aft braces but if I did that I would have a rather large ugly gap where the bonnet meets the body scuttle or the rad shell! The previous owner had a new body tub made and I suspect it is not quite true to specs and somehow it seems to fit further back.  When I get a spare moment in the garage I may try some adjustments to bring the fan closer to the radiator to check any improvements to the cooling.

My attention was drawn to the over heating problem when stuck in traffic on the Malahat Highway (Vancouver Island) and my combi temperature gauge was reading about 60 psi on the oil side.
