For what it's worth
I had conversations with SUDCO, a very good resource, over the years and here's what to expect from them; The best bit of Generally Useful "tuning intel" is the following:
Pilot jet- down 1 step / 4000' higher altitude
Main jet- down 1 step / 2000' " "
Needle jet- drop needle 1 notch / 2000' " "
This is the sum total of tuning info you can get for free. However if you buy a carb package and want one of their experts to set it up for you they will but expect to pay for it.
All these are based upon stock jetting* as the reference point
There's lost of variables here such as the motor and carb jetting are not 'box stock', you're then in an area where "general" guidelines aren't reliable . . *except if it's already correctly jetted for where you're at(altitude).
A reminder; If you just like to sit and watch our bike Idle OR don't always run WFO then the 'Bread & Butter' tuning target is the Needle Jet System. (You can ride all day with the main jet in your pocket . . .as long as you don't go past 75% throttle. Or stated differently, changing your main has no effect on the needle system 15-75% throttle)

carb tuning
All well and good except the stock KLR CVK carburetor has no adjustable needle.
I wouldn t say that the main jet has no effect but a diminishing effect. The effect of the main jet is gradual and not cut off completely, except at very low throttle settings. All the different jetting circuits in a carb overlap. http://www.iwt.com.au/images/effects3.gif

carb tuning
Read somewhere today that the needle position (should you have a choice)
gives the equivalent of one to two needle jet sizes per notch. Just like
the pilot circuit where I changed the pilot jet to get the air screw
adjustment as close to 1 1/2 turns (mid range) even though you could tune it
to a larger pilot jet.
Also interesting thread on the airheads conversion to Mikunis

The tuning numbers this guy (msg #8) came up with look surprisingly close to
those I have found.

carb tuning
Ron you pose a very useful question . . for which I have no answer, however I
suspect there is such a relationship. If one had access to the actual
numerical dimensions or the Needle jet itself and the needles with dimensions
and taper defined one could run the numbers to determine the specific annular
areas and answer the question. In lieu of that work there is the Mikuni
Engineering Dept where that info is readily available.
In the '70's when we were doing a lot of substituting Mikuni's for Amals or the
German carbs I was given a complete catalog of Mikuni carbs and tuning
details-40-50 pages, I'm not sure if I can find it now. I do have a very good
filing system . . .it's the retrieval system that sucks.
Let's start asking questions through all of our potential sources and see if
some one of us gets a "Bingo Moment", then please post it.
